I have written before and mocked for saying the new NBA will all be about Wingspan to height ratio and that the way to win is to have your 2 Guard be interchangeable with your 4 man. In the new dynamic offenses the NBA features, you will need to be able to play Kawhi at 4, and Kawhi at 2. LeBron posting up or LeBron paying on the perimeter. You gotta make sure your PG is long enough and strong enough not to get posted up and you gotta make sure your big is mobile enough not to be taken to the perimeter.

The Spurs know this. And it's why they traded GHill for Kawhi. It's why they drafted Livio Jean-Charles.

What NBA teams are learning is that the development process can be perfected so much with the right strength trainer, the right shooting coach, the right off season drills that the key to a player are his fluidness, length, mobility, intelligence, and motor. The Spurs have the best staff and tools available so they are just trying to find the best canvas to use.

This is a great pick. And love how teams like the Spurs, Indiana, Chicago are embracing this new era of basketball style.

This is precisely why Dwight Howard is a completely overrated piece in the new NBA. It's why Blake Griffin is all hype. Griffen is 6'9 with 6'8 wingspan. Sure he has vertical. But because you need to time your jump to block shots, time your jump to do a hook shot at your apex, if two players can both reach 12'5 on a max jump, you'd always take the player that can reach higher without even jumping. This is why Kawhi is such a great rebounder and why Dajuan Blair was a good rebounder as well.

I can see some of your logic. However I seem to believe that the pick was a cost avoidance- salary cap pick. Maybe this guy becomes something, but the important thing was that the Spurs have money to bring in a free agent who is ready to win now.

The problem is he's a goddamn forward. He's got to move his game out to the perimeter or he's useless. And I know they list him at 6'9, but you gotta always at least take off 2 inches off whatever these guys are listed at.

But yeah, size and length is crucial to being a good team, especially in the NBA. The only player on the team who should be allowed to be under 6'6 is the PG. That's why Syracuse is so great in college basketball. They only recruit size. Even their PG this past year was 6'5 in Micheal-Carter Williams. Long arms=deflections and good defense.

I'm sorry but you're wrong. he is 6'9" in shoes which makes him 6'8" with out shoes. he is a legit 6'9 kid. and could still grow some. as he is only 19.

I agree with the premise. Yeah, players need to be able to guard multiple positions. But like JR3 said, think this was more about saving money this year and possibly bringing him over in a few years.

Yeah, players who are only centres or PG's can't play, that's why Hibbert was so useless in the layoffs.

It's good to be able to guard multiple positions, but the NBA is about having the best players on the floor, and they are spread out by size.

I don't think Livio is among the 28 best players now, and I don't think he projected to get there with any random NBA team. But the Spurs are really goo at developing players, they have some pretty clear input to make him play in a bit more over time and can have him practice the things they want him to get better at. I think this pick looks fine in a few years, but I'll credit the post draft work more so than the selection itself.

PJ realized that. He preferred longer players because of their ability to shrink the court for the other team. If we had more length in the game with 28 sec left in game 6 we make a defensive play or get a rebound.

Saving money so they will have room to pay other guys AFTER overpaying Tiago. No choice but to overpay Tiago though - whom else do you want?

i absolutely agree with anything he said (other than BG being just hype), height, wingspan and lateral quickness, these are the best criteria to look at when you're drafting, all the rest can be developed (almost). Livio fits the first two, i don't know about his quickness though.

My bad. But still a good 5 inches shorter than many players at his position.

Wade, Chalmers, Cole, Allen and Miller to name a few won the championship without having a massive Wingspan, I call that pure BS

His shorter wingspan allows him to throw down those powerful dunks.
