No need to hurry. When the Spurs figure out the FAs that are interested, they'll cobble together a plan and see if Manu will take the leftovers. Manu's not a threat to sign anywhere else.

Well, maybe the Spurs and Manu have that type of understanding, CG. If so, then that makes sense. If not though, they would need to know what Manu is looking for so they can have a real range of what they can go after. I really, really doubt they are looking for FA's and will go back to Manu and say "we have x for you only, take it or leave it".

Not sure..but different years call for different plans. We don't know what goes on behind closed doors...and Manu is not Timmy(and vice versa)..

If not though, they would need to know what Manu is looking for so they can have a real range of what they can go after. He's Manu for crying out loud, it's almost baffling that some people on this board think the Spurs would just cut ties with him for a poor Finals performance. His veteran presence in the locker room is worth the vet min, at least, and I think they at least owe that to him.

I agree and that would be fantastic if they have that understanding and Manu will take what the Spurs have left. If so, major props to Manu.

I'm thinking more along the lines of how Manu's deal gets structured. For example, if Manu wants 2yrs/$12 mil can you get him to accept 3yrs/$13 to save some capspace this year?

Perhaps, but it doesn't make a ton of sense to spread out the years with Manu like that IMO. Very well could happen though, but then you leave yourself pretty open to insulting Manu and risking him looking else where. It just seems more likely that they want him back and have an understanding of what they can work with. But either way in your scenario quoted, the Spurs and Manu have a number in mind.

I'd think the Spurs and Manu have a professional enough relationship where he wouldn't get offended if the Spurs explained to him what they were trying to accomplish. Whether Manu would be willing to accept something like that would be a different matter, but the idea of trading an extra year or two for a lower initial salary is certainly something the Spurs should take a look at IMO.

But let's say the haven't spoken with Manu, but they talk to Tiago (and say they will match an offer above the cap hold for him) and they talk to AK and offer 8M per year, they then have to go to Manu and say "take it or leave it" unless like CG said, they add on years with lower salary to make up for it.

Seems like the Spurs and Manu have a range in mind for the new contract. Doubt the Spurs would position themselves in a situation where the above scenario occurs.
