Yup. Jimmy was talked into firing D'antoni last year until they went on the winning streak. And used it as a "told you so" moment. Great move tbh![]()
No, but they never really had a bad owner during that time.... Berger and Chalfen got it started, Bob Short turned them around after some lean years and moved them to LA, and Jack Kent Cooke kept the dynasty going.... now Jimbo's in charge and it's already a trainwreck, he appears to be the LA version of James Dolan, tbh....
The Lakers also finally have compe ion for free agents and ratings dollars from the Clippers and a new generation of stars who care more about the here and now than about age-old history and dusty old banners.... it's gonna be an uphill slog unless the league steps in and forces them back into relevance....

Solid signing imho, at least they have a center now who will play 60+ games a season and won't act a towards his fans and teammates.
The Celtics went through almost a decade of complete irrelevance, followed by a couple of good years and then 4-5 really bad ones. Don't see why the Lakers can't too when being run by a moron.
Mitch already building his resume for GM of the year.
I don't know. It's just that history suggests they will. Maybe Carmelo gets sick of the Knicks not getting it right and decides to join the Lakers. Maybe they somehow woo Kevin Durant. Maybe the Russian sells the Nets and Deron Williams and Brook Lopez get gifted to the Lakers. Maybe there's a draft day deal that gets the Lakers one of the next superstars. Who knows? I don't nor do I claim to know. The Lakers just find ways to do it way more quickly than any other team in the league. They have never been irrelevant for too long. A handful of seasons at most. You're suggesting a decade. I think it's unrealistic.
Mind you, I'm not saying they'll be championship contenders immediately or can do that in a 3 year stretch, just not a lottery team or borderline lottery team for 10 straight years.
The majority of the Celtics success was based on drafting and/or scouting (in the Bill Russell years), and then two major trades (Parish, McHale and KG, Ray Allen). They haven't had the free agent draw the Lakers have always seemed to have. Even when the Lakers are bad, they will find high level free agents to come there. Maybe not always superstars, but among the top free agents. I see Dwight Howard spurning them much more likely to be an exception than a precedent of what's to happen in coming years.
Depends on how long Kobe plays. Doesn't seem like many want to play with him.
If David Stern didn't veto the CP3 to the Lakers trade, do you think CP3 would have left the Lakers to sign with the Clippers?
CP3 re-signing is very much a product of him getting traded there. The Clippers also won the lottery to get Blake Griffin.
Re-signing Matt Barnes, signing a 40 year old Grant Hill last year, signing fat Lamar... and those are the "good" free agents the Clippers are pulling. I'm not sure the Clippers will necessarily be a better draw for elite free agents, especially with most of their cap spent on CP3/Griffin/Jordan and the Lakers seemingly going to have a lot of cap space in upcoming seasons especially when Kobe retires.
And remember, as bad as the Lakers season was last year and for the Clippers having its franchise best regular season, the Lakers made it just as far in the playoffs as the Clippers did, exiting the first round. I think you may overestimate the appeal and draw of the Clippers.
Shrugs, maybe. But Kobe isn't playing much longer. 2-3 years tops. After that, won't the top free agents want to go to the Lakers if they get max contracts with all the cap space Kobe's salary will create being off the books?
Clips just a passing fad. They need to win and win soon. I hope they dobecause I bet Sterling wont keep taht team together unless they do, the cheap bas !
Sterling's still an asshole, but I can't really say he's cheap anymore, not with the high-priced training facility, the highest paid coach in the league and all the money spent on the roster, tbh..... he's also 80 years old and senile, I'd be surprised if he owns the team for much longer...
this sounds a lot like the Lakers pitch to Dwight...
So Dwight says the rockets are better NOW, and they have a good young core. why should I stay with the Lakers.
Lakers: Because we're the Lakers.
this whole "because they're the lakers" bull is sickening. lets see something concrete before we start talking about how compe ive they'll be in 3 years. they have something like 2 first round picks in the next 5 years. they're not going to suck enough to get Wiggins or Parker (most probably), and LeBron ain't coming to LA, while Melo will be bad for the team since they won't be able to land lottery players and won't be good enough to win anything.
Maybe you are right, we will see. I dont hate the Clips. Yall hold down Staples for a few seasons while we get our back together ...
Why is 60+ years of history not good enough evidence, but one pretty bad season and a star free agent not choosing them concrete enough evidence to predict 10 years of mediocrity?
The initial contention I argued with was that the Lakers would be a borderline lottery team for the next 10 years. Where's concrete evidence for that?
The fact that the Lakers have never had a prime free agent walk away from them tells you that things are different. the lakers most recent drought of compe iveness was from 05-07 until they got the gift, which propelled them to the top of the league. the time before, they got back on top because they just so happened to sign shaq, one the biggest free agent acquisitions in league history. the lakers don't really have valuable assets that would land them another gift and the only player that is a free agent possibility in the near future that could mimic shaq's impact is LeBron, but the general consensus is it ain't happening. i just want to see how one expects them to regain compe iveness. what is the plan? who are their targets? they won't really be able to rebuild through the draft unless they land wiggins and put a team around that. even earl clark left
And yet where is the concrete evidence that those things will cause 10 years of mediocrity? 10 years is an awful long time. 10 years?
Yo....step away from the son![]()
At least Splitter has near-elite pick and roll defense to fall back on. Kaman's P&R D made the Brazilian look like prime Amare.
The curse of Daryl Morey. Somehow he transferred it to Kobestan.
Sterling has surprised a lot of Clipper fans the past 2 years. 50 win team, division le, 20+ winning streak and numerous national TV exposures. The taste of success really has him going. He has committed top dollar on CP3, signed a coach of Doc's caliber and has been signing quality players to bolster our bench. I think he's in it to win it lol!
Clippers are honestly in good shape, they will be better than the Lakers for at least the next 4-5 years, and this is taking the Lakers' massive cap space into consideration. Clippers have a 3 year window with this core IMHO. I don't know if they'll win a le, if they don't in 3 years, then we'll see their key pieces slowly being traded. I was hoping they'll get KG but that fell through the cracks. They're still in limbo as long as DJ is the Clippers starting Center.
Sterling's been less of a cheapass since Paul arrived and his son? died.
Need I remind you that your star player can't even get his shot off when the gets thick? The Clippers are a team and fanbase of has-beens and life long losers. That ain't never changing. Just be happy that we allow you guys to rent our arena.
Lakers are banking on 2014. Lebron, Wade and Bosh will not leave. Not after winning their back2back. Even if they don't pan out next year, I'm positive 2 of those will stay with Miami and the third can go to the Lakers (and its not Lebron) and that guy assuming Bosh) won't make a damn mark in that franchise. 2015? Rondo, Love and LMA are the top FA's, but ask yourself if any of these can really continue L.A.'s tradition of winning a le.
I know Dwight is not a popular player in Lakers history, but losing him was a big blow. None of the key Free Agent can alter a franchise like Dwight tbh.
