I'm not saying I didn't want Manu back at all, but seriously, in what universe do we pay him 2yrs/14M after what we witnessed in the Finals? I've been an enormous Manu fan since before he arrived in San Antonio. Watched clips of him with Bologna way before he became a Spur, and predicted he'd be a star player for us. But....do any of us even know who this guy is anymore?

if Bonner didn't get a pink slip after a career of ting in the playoffs, what makes you think a guy like Manu would?
This FO doesn't knee-jerk. They're going to give him the benefit of the doubt and see what he looks like next season. And it makes sense, because unlike Bonner, Manu has proven his worth over the years, even when he isn't supermanu.

always turning this back on Bonner. IIRC, Bonner actually showed up this postseason (for the most part) and didn't blow the Finals while having the biggest contract. I don't want to defend Bonner, his postseasons are already duly noted, but physically he's far more reliable than Senor Vidrio.
Point is that loyalty is a good thing, and I'm glad Spurs are loyal, but is it worth being loyal to people that are unreliable at this point in their career? (this could go for Bonner as well)
I don't buy it's just "loyalty". I think they do feel they get great production from him, and understand that replacing what he does on this particular team wouldn't be easy for them. They likely don't take for granted the 50 wins a season, like a lot of posters here do. They won't knee jerk over a game/series/playoff run. They also know who they're dealing with here, if Manu's decline becomes this pronounced and permanent, they're fully aware Manu will just retire.

As far as Bonner, I think they finally figured out they can't play him against certain teams. Took way too long to figure out, but apparently they're at that stage now.
do you think your boy would've taken less had he known Ak47 was coming over, or would Manu throw a fit, even after his tiest year? also, you think Spurs knew AK47 wasn't even going to come here and knew something shady was brewing in the background so therefore had no problem giving Manu another friendly contract?
i've said before that I'm not as pissed about the Manu deal now knowing that Kirilenko was most likely never coming here to begin with, can't compete with that Russian mafia money.

I've no idea what they were thinking. Frankly, I don't see this FO as one that goes into the offseason without a plan, set priorities, etc. If I had to guess, I think they understand how hard it is to have a team that can compete for a championship and last season's team was that, flaws and all. So my guess is that the priority was to get the same team back, as close as possible, plus a couple of new projects to plug in. Then perhaps see if they could swing for some talent like AK, as a secondary priority. Under that scenario, re-signing Tiago and Manu, and getting insurance in case Neal got paid, were priority over hiring AK47/Ellis/etc. And that's the route they went.
From anything I've heard both Manu and the FO were happy to come to an agreement for the deal he eventually signed. Buford said today that Manu "made a significant sacrifice to come back", so that makes you think the money Manu took is the money the Spurs offered him. I think the Spurs are a team that doesn't forget Manu never ed about coming off the bench when he was clearly a starter, or embracing the backup PG role because there was nobody else to run it, even though it's not the ideal position for him. He never cared how he personally looked like, and put the team first. When you look back at the Jax situation last season, and the forced exit because of the ego situation, you have to remember that's a lot of times the norm in the league.
What's the over/under on when we start hearing the word amnesty regarding Manu's new contract? 20 games in? 40 games in? The miraculous thing is that he was - for Manu - quite healthy during this year's playoffs. That why watching him play so badly made no sense. It's like he had an injured brain.
Thats fine and dandy to say to the so called haters, but he better play better next playoffs and he knows it. He sucked late this year to be honest, some of the dumbest passes I have seen and some bad shooting too! He has to do better this year though, we needed him in game 6 and 7 to win the finals this year and his absense or presence at times hurt. I hope he was just hurt this year and he will play better next year! He was not bad until his injury this year, after that he was never the same.Hey Manu haters!
With that being said I did not want him anywhere else and I hope he has a good year this year like Tim after 011 AND turns it around for a year or so! I wish for nothing more than this!
I'll put them at 0%, since you can only amnesty contracts from the previous CBA. That means the only player left the Spurs can amnesty is Tony Parker.
it occurred to me earlier, what if Spurs told Manu they would pay him South American scrub money (paraphrasing of course) if he plays for the national team again and runs his body down, or were willing to give him a much nicer deal if he agreed to give that up. If so, that would explain the "significant sacrifice" part. I know it's been said on here you can't prevent a player from playing for their national team, but perhaps it was a gentleman's agreement.

Doubt it. At the end of the day, the only complaints about NT play are in this board, not from FO. And it's not like they couldn't complain if they wanted to, Cuban does it all the time. IMO, this FO would rather they don't play, but also understand that they rather have a compe ive player and that's one of the tradeoffs, and that they're normally short compe ions with full insurance, which covers the business side. And this applies not just to Manu, but all of our international players.

I'm sure RC was projecting how good he thinks Ginoboli will be next year when considering it a "sacrifice." There's no way he could think that given Ginoboli's overall performance last year. That said, I think playing a team like the Heat was Ginoboli's worst nightmare. Teams that play a different defense style (not crazy athletes playing the passing lanes), are more his cup. In other words, I think Ginoboli plays well against the Pacers, but a team like Miami that plays the passing lanes has a much easier time picking off his passes when he tries to improvise.
