I was contacted a week ago Tuesday by a Dell Talent Recruiter for a position as a tech writer working closely with product engineers. I would write manuals for end users and Tier One support. We spoke for about a half-hour, we went over basic job duties and expected compensation and she said I would have a phone interview with Rick, one of the product engineers.

Next day I had a half-hour phone interview with him. It went well and he arranged for me to come in on Friday for an on-site interview. The first half-hour was with Rick and Larry, another product engineer. They even brought in a third person that I didn't know was going to be there. The questions weren't too hard and I didn't get stumped and I know I interviewed well, but of course they are not going to show their cards. The last half-hour I interviewed alone over conference phone with Bonnie, the head of their technical writing department. Towards the end of the interview she says "I'm going to be honest with you, I think you're a really strong candidate and a great fit, and I"m going to go ahead and recommend to Rick and Larry that you would be a good fit for the job. If you don't hear from us for 2 or 3 days, it's bc Dell is a big company and there is a lot of red tape to go through, but like I said, I'm going to go ahead and make that recommendation to them that you'd be a very good fit for the position." She also mentioned that they need to fill this position sooner rather than later, and she also said two spots are open. So I would only have to be their second-strongest candidate, not their first choice.

Rick then walked me out and said "Okay, the next step is Bonnie, Larry and I will confer amongst ourselves, and if you don't hear anything from us this afternoon, then you will Monday morning at the latest, be it we want to move forward with you, we decide to go in a different direction, or we want you to come back and talk to some more people." I thanked him for his time and consideration and then that afternoon sent a follow-up thank you email to the Talent Recruiter since I have no way of contacting them directly.

I would think if I'm no longer in the running then they would have notified me? There's no red tape or bureacracy to instruct the Talent Recruiter to send me a courtesy email to inform me I'm no longer under consideration? He told me I would hear something by Monday morning and it's already Monday afternoon.

It's likely someone over them that is the holdup, it's happened to a few of my friends at Dell as well as other large companies. I wouldn't sweat it too much. I was hired on my 364th temp day where I currently work cause a VP was out of office for nearly a month and he was the final signoff on hires.

I'm cautiously optimistic. I figure if I was no longer in the running, the recruiter would have sent me a courtesy kicked to the curb email by now.

As much as we'd like to believe people are courteous and delivery on time, it does not always happen. Not abnormal what you are going through & they are a big company. Give it a couple of days.

"monday" is just an approximate time. maybe the 2-3 days meant work days so you can expect it to come around Wensday or Thursday imho, saturday and sunday don't count. after all, you heard it from an American rather than a German, so several days of delay ain't nothing uncommon, but you'll have got the response by friday this week at latest.

Chill dude. They are all still hung over from the weekend. If I was betting I'd say you will hear from them around 2:30 tomorrow. Get that out of the way before happy hour.

I have another offer from a firm that I've already accepted and I tentatively start August 1st, but this is the job I really want. Would it be crass or a mistake to contact them later in the week if I still haven't heard them and say "I really want to come work for Dell and this is my first choice, but I have another offer and I will need to give them an answer soon?" Or would that backfire?

Since she said 2-3 days, then I will sit tight until at least Thursday if I hear nothing. I read an excellent blog called askamanager that deals with these type of questions a lot. Check it out if you're ever in the hunt for a job.

Generally, if they gave you a specific time line, then it's okay to contact them and ask if everything is okay - I would wait till tomorrow though.

The sad truth is, a lot of organizations simply don't bother emailing back candidates that they decided not to continue on. Weird that a large company like Dell would do something like that, but it's entirely possible.

Also, for the second offer - since you already accepted it, how bad would it tarnish your reputation to back out, assuming Dell offered you a position?

It's entirely okay to contact Dell with something like:

"Hey, I just wanted to hear back from you guys regarding the position I interviewed for - I already have another offer in writing, so I wanted
to know where I stand. Dell is my first choice and I would really love to come work for you."

This is entirely okay and might help push through those last few bureaucratic steps.

Well, my position where I currently work is being eliminated at the end of the month. My last day is tentatively July 31st. We lost our biggest client and with it half our business. I was one of the cuts. The firm taking over for them contacted us all and set up interviews. I figure one in the hand is worth two in the bush and went ahead and accepted. The fact is, the Dell job is a lot more money, in a field I am interested in, and offers more growth potential and room for advancement. None of those things are true where I am tentatively slated to go. I have to do what's best for my career.

Absolutely - if Dell offers(fingers crossed) just make sure this is exactly how you explain it to them - always best to not burn any bridges.

I would contact the recruiter tomorrow with a short email inquiring about the process+mentioning you have another offer in writing, then if you don't hear anything back
    email again on Friday.

Should I be cautiously optimistic based on what she said about recommending me? I figured she could have been a lot more non-committal and been like "Well it was a pleasure speaking with you today. We have other candidates to talk to, and we'll be in touch if we think you're a good fit."

She tipped her hand...said you were a strong fit and that there were multiple positions to fill. I would take Monday to mean "early next week" and not sweat it. Thinking you kicked ass on an interview and hearing positive reinforcing feedback are two different things. Hang tight and send a follow-up note to the recruiter. You could inform them about the other offer, but it might not be necessary at this point.

I did send this to the recruiter on Friday afternoon after the interview:

    Hi Dee Ann,

I just wanted to follow up and let you know that it was a pleasure to meet with Rick, Larry and Bonnie this morning and discuss the position. I think it is a tremendous opportunity for me and I think I would be a great fit at Dell. If you could pass along my gra ude to them for the opportunity to interview and discuss the position, I would greatly appreciate it, and I look forward to hearing from you soon. Thanks.

If the Dell job is what you really like then you should go for it at any cost just like how Cuban pursued the Triple D dream, it comes with risk but the potential reward is probably worth it. Imagine what a mess life would turn if you get cut again in 5-10 years, and it'd be 10x as hard for you to find a job when you're already 40+ years old without any significant breakthroughs in your career. You can spend a few years living on your previous savings even without a job, knowing that you don't have a to feed either (which's the biggest benefit of being a celibate imho). You can continue to pursue your dreams with your hands free, do things that you like and live a frugal life. Even if you end up missing out on the Dell job, you will probably get a better one some time later, or one of the same caliber at least. I'm a lifelong celibate and am about to become a broke ass student yet again so I don't really have any real advice to give, but I'm convinced of one thing which's that I should never allow myself to waste my talent and intelligence on a ty treadmill job like I once did. Getting a and a marriage is and will always be the last thing I'd ever wanna do in my life, so I don't see nothing that I should sacrifice my dreams for.

"more growth potential and room for advancement" is what appeals to me most. I wouldn't really care about the pay and I know I would have to take on more pressure working in a Big corp that Dell is, but I would never evade challenges because those are exactly what I want.

Good note. Follow-up should say something like "when I spoke with Bonnie and team last week they indicated I might hear something early this week. Any insight you could provide on the timeline or next steps would be appreciated."

with that said, you don't need to turn down the other side too soon. It's always a great thing to have a plan B to fall back upon in case the plan A should fail. But I don't think it would be a good idea to use plan B as a leverage in the negotiation with plan A, because it isn't a leverage at all. Those PR staffers know the job market better than you do and they know the real quality of the offer that you already have at hand. If the Dell job is SO much better than the offer that you already have, you would only embarrass yourself by showing off a ty offer in front of those sharp eyes.

tbh this is perfectly normal behavior for a large tech company, as is sending the "we decided do go in another direction" email 6 months later when you work for said company already.

Findog, is this the Dell in Round Rock? I hope you get hired because I used to work there and it's an awesome place to work at. But...when I went in for an interview, I took a test and they hired me the same day. Maybe it's a different process for your position. I would move on from this and keep looking if I were you.

It's actually for a small company of about 200 employees here in Dallas that Dell bought about 6 months ago. But the HR process runs through Dell.
