Are we sure about that? He's "only" made $23 mil. We've seen guys who've made a whole lot more than that find a way to blow it all.
Doesn't really seem the strip clubs and shark tanks kind of guy, tbh.

Not saying he'll pick SAS just saying he seems to have a head on his shoulders.

He's estimated at about $15 M so it's not as much as I anticipated. He could probably get half that from a contender and I'm not sure the 1.5, - 1.7 M difference in salary would be a huge factor in his decision seeing how he'd be competing for a championship.

If he's healthy and can contribute, I'd love for you guys to be right. But considering how little money he's made, by NBA standards, so far and the uncertainty of how many more years he'll be able to collect an NBA paycheck, I'm betting he still thinks of $2 million dollars as being too much money to pass up.

the 3 million would obviously be trumped by a 2 year deal, but who wants to take that risk ?

Another thing to think of though, is that he is basically "auditioning" on this one year contract. He will obviously get more opportunities for exposure and coaching from either Miami or SA, while STILL competing for an NBA Championship. It's these factors that make me believe that the Pelicans really don't have a chance - and they have to believe they don't have much of one, or else they wouldn't be "overpaying" for him.

Agreed. Don't see a lot of solid arguments against this.

He hasn't played in 3 years. I'd be beyond shocked if the possibility of winning a championship weighs more heavily on him than the possibility that this could be the last NBA contract he'll ever sign.

Just out of curiosity, what would the minimum contract for Oden be per the CBA? I'm wondering what the difference would be between the $3M that NO is supposedly offering compared to the minimum contract from either Miami or SA, especially when you add in the lack of a state income tax (even though I realize that it wouldn't be an astronomical difference).

I'm going to guess that an extra ~$1M isn't going to sway Oden to choose the Pelicans over a Championship-level team like the Spurs or the Heat. I think that this is his agent's attempt to get Oden more than a minimum deal from either the Spurs or Heat.
I believe the vet minimum in $1.2M. I'm not the best suited to answer CBA questions.

If that's the case then why would the Spurs and the Heat be listed as one and two on his preferred destinations? And I never stated that a chance to compete for a championship was the main factor - but it would be hard to argue that it's a nonfactor, no? In the end, you may be right - but I don't think he's looking at this as his last contract, but more of an audition for what MAY be his last contract the following season.

Meh, kids are dumb. Georgie did it too. The trick is learning and growing from the stupid . I think he was likely humbled by his knee situation since he seems to have tried to stay out of the limelight in that last few years.

Speaking of the Pacers, I'm surprised they haven't added a shooter yet, their most glaring weakness against the Heat.

Also I'm sure transactions will start up again following Summer league and/or as teams are eliminated from it.

The difference between Pat Riley and R.C. Buford is one isa pursuer and the other is a surveyor. I'm pretty sure Miller was released to make way for Mo Williams. He would have been a better option off the bench than Gary Neal for the Spurs. He's pretty much a low risk, high reward signing.
