The reality is that team was very fortunate to win a championship... but we definitely were the best team that year and the stars aligned and Dirk played brilliantly and the trades for Kidd, Chandler, and Marion paid dividends... along with contributions here and there from the entire bench.
But ultimately I think people overrate getting rid of Chandler. The entire team was going to be a year older. the Terry/Kidd backcourt declined the next year and Dirk didn't replicate his magic from the year past... not to mention the Heat, Thunder, Spurs, and Bulls improved.
Assuming the Mavs brought Chandler back, they would've been the 4th-5th best team in the NBA regardless.
So even though it didn't work out, the elusive chase for a 2nd superstar to compliment Dirk was not a bad idea at all and I have no ill thoughts toward our great front office. It was a boom or bust mentality that everyone claims to like... and yet when the Mavs FO tries to practice it, people criticize it.
The same FO that was ted on for the Chandler/Kidd/Marion/Butler trades that led us to the le... mind you.
It just didn't work out and our time passed.
I honestly think the Mavs will be around the 20th best team in the league next year. This roster looks absolutely lousy. Dalembert and Ellis seem like nice names but those types of talents will never change the fortune of a basketball team. I anticipate a 36-46 season or something like that... very lousy looking team right now and I don't think Dirk is a top 10 player anymore.
Letting Chandler go was dumb.
It was a mistake, I don't think they would have repeated but they would definitely be right up there with the top teams, maybe WCF or Finals
Golden rule to never break up a championship team. Then again guys like jj barea thought they deserved a big contract. Sometimes you let them go.

Threads like this are reasons why Ghazi is the most respectable mavs fan to have ever posted on Spurstalk imho. Can't argue against anything he said in the OP, and I can feel that everything he says about our team, no matter positive or negative, comes from the top of his heart, with total genuineness and pure love.
I agree with him that the damange caused by the departure of TC was a bit overestimated. Even if we had kept his ass in Dallas, it would've still been an impossible mission for us to repeat the 11' glory with our whole squad being one year older, while the Thunder were rising and the Miami Dynasty seemed imminent. And don't forget we would no longer have the same level of appe e, which was the spiritual power that drove us through muddle and puddle in 11, and eventually led us to the promised land. We were extremely lucky to steal one before the door was closed and I'm satisfied with what we've got. A satisfied mind is an eternal feast.
Ghazi is also a great person in the real life, fathomably. Everytime I read your story, my friend and mentor - the Reverend Cully, I think of Ghazi and his wife, and another guy whose name initials are T and C. Ghazi, or any Robert type of guy, are the ones I respect most in my life. They've totally escaped from the limitation of the animal property of humans, they're more complete humans than the vast majority.
Ghazi is correct, TC is no saviour. Doesnt change the fact it was a mistake to break up that team, especially with a strike shortened season upcoming, IIRC. I certainly dont think yall had the drive to repeat.And even if you did the Heat were coming back for vengeance. But NONE of that erases the mistake of not giving your team a a chance to defend that le. I get you need another star, but that was something to figure out later. It's been two years and the Mavs are not any closer to having that next sure fire star. I get hind-sight is 20/20 but many on here especially Lakers fans were criticizing the move from the get go. Maybe because yall kicked our ass, but we seemed to have more faith in the 2012 Mavs if they came back then Mav fans did/do. I saw the gas going on E after our repeat, but I get why the Lakers did not break up the team until after the Mavs swept our ass. You give your team a chance to defend that belt, period.

Yeah you say all that hypothetically but don't act like you wouldn't trade in the last 2 years for a chance to see what WOULD happen if yall kept that team together in a heartbeat.

What kills me, is that mentality of well we 'caught lightning in a bottle" or Heat would of won regardless (sure, that was likely) even though you just beat the Heat the year before. Mavs had been to a Finals already with Dirk and Jet. Dirk was coming off a MVP level post-season. And the Mavs have been consistently a contender for most of a decade. To not give them a chance was asinine.
One has to wonder if they had kept Tyson Chandler, but still dropped the same players, if they would have had better luck in free agency.
Tyson also could of been trade bait. If he has a 2012 DPOTY type year for dem Mavs, Cubes could of possibly flipped him for Dwight tbh ...

Dwill has his moments, but I agree. Thing is deron a local product did not sign with Dallas gonna be pretty tough to get others to sign in Dallas. It's a good market great housing but it's not NY or LA. cubes is a great owner and RC a great coach but lacks teh charisma of the Doc Rivers type coach. No state income tax, but school taxes, property taxes etc. are high. As well as the HOA to live in the gated communities of Allen, highland Park, Frisco, Prosper etc.
It might be a mistake to let TC walk but Cuban had his own reasons to make that decision, mostly financial incentives. He had been one of the biggest spenders the years prior and maybe he thought it was time to fold things up when the primary objective was already achieved.
Them Mavs wouldn't have won another ring after 2011, with or without TC. They would've stayed in the le contention with TC on board, yes, but things wouldn't have turned better for them than the post-08 celtics. They would continue to "contend" for a few more years but their championship count would remain at 1, then it would come the rebuilding process and they would be tied to mediocrity for years to come, with their best players gone (like the Celtics).
Them mavs still has a franchise player in the form of Dirk, and an excellent coaching staff led by Carlisle. They've refreshed/replenished their squad with le-chasing veterans who're just as hungry as them 2011' mavs. It's not like we could replicate 2011 with the current squad but we will stay relevant and challenge the best teams like we did through the 2000s. We're sending a message to the rest of the league that we're not going to tank, we had every reason to tank the past season with Dirk injured but we didn't. we kept fighting for a playoff spot till the last week of regular season, and even when we were already out of the race we still played as hard as we could to avoid a losing record, which we did. Tank for Wiggins? Sorry but them Mavs have too much self-respect to ever do that.
Well said. And I dont disagree ...still sand by my thoughts on the matter ...but I get why yall defend Cubes. That one seemed to domesticate the fanbase.
Not all of us defend Cubes though, some mavs fan has been bashing Cuban and the mavs FO since before our 11' campaign. You never hear a good word from his pickle mouth even when the team benefits from Cuban's wisdom. Whenever a "dumb" move is made, or one that he arbitrarily considers as a dumb move (like the DUST chip for TC deal), he'll do his utmost to reprimand Cuban and the Mavs FO like he just found himself being cheated on by his .
Tyson Chandler may not have been the savior but he was the best center the Mavs ever had. He was the defensive presence in the middle that the Mavs had always been missing and finally got it for 1 season. Chandler deserves props for his service and dedication to the Mavs for 1 season. His 1 season with the Mavs and the 2011 championship basically saved his career and revitalized his career.
breakin up a playoff roster doesnt make sense
if you loook at that mavs team at last seasons celtics, if you kept the teams roster and milk whatever is left is probably better then tanking a few seasons or the possibility of achieving nothing in the rebuilding phase

^ champs think differently than losers do imho. Mavs had always been chasing a le since Cuban took office but they had gone bare-handed until 2011. Winning the le had always been our goal throughout the 2000s. As that goal has already been achieved, it's time for us to face the reality now:
1. Miami is taking over the league thoroughly and completely, and they won't be dethroned anytime soon.
2. Dirk is approaching the end of his playing career and we'll have to start rebuilding once he hangs his jersey. We don't wanna see our team being tied to mediocrity during the rebuilding session (like the Suns and Kings that used to be strong in the mid 2000s) so we'd better make preparations beforehand, and make sure things will transition smoothly.
I agree that making the playoffs > being a lottery team, and that was why we fought out best during the 2nd half of last season for a playoff spot. The presence of TC escalated us from a 2nd round exit to the championship level, but even without him we would still be able to make playoffs if Dirk and other key players stay healthy. TC could lift us over the head of the 11' Heat, but not the 12' or 13' Miami.
