I just bought a new tv stand. Got good reviews (and wife's approval). People say it will hold up to a 55" tv. I think they list 85lbs.

I finally got around to unloading the old tv for the moment. With the room and everything, I'm not sure how anything about 50" will work.
i think you shouldve kept the old tv man

my friend has 2 tvs in the lounge room, the big screen is only turn on when friends are over, the small one is always on <<< same here with me, since the plasma uses alot of energy and i rarely watch anything on my 60 plasma, the only time its on is when im karaoke night and the occasional movie, everything else like news and i watch on the small screen, or just stream whatever online on my pc or portable player....

do you have kids? couldve just put it in the kids room with pixar movies on LOOP....good way to babysit

I still have the 2 tvs. No kids. Was looking to give at least 1 to my brother and his family. Brand new house, needs some stuff. A bit house poor at the moment.

Either way, I hate our current plasma tv. Heavy, dumps out heat. Has some screen burn in issues now. Half the time it won't even turn on.

I've been wanting a new tv for the past 5 years... Kept putting it off for one reason or another (dating, educational stuff, engagement ring, honeymoon, etc). Finally somewhat settled, new job. I'm ready to finally upgrade.

how old is ur current plasma?

plasmas are known to overheat, but it doesnt bother me if you have a cold room...

im not worried about burning in

how big is ur loungeroom? could really be the difference in a home theatre system 5.1 or +7.1...i think ima settle for a 5.1 system, cbf having alot of speakers in the lounge room...

Room dimensions I dont have, didn't measure it out. Our plasma is from like 2005 I think. My wife has had since before we met 6 years ago.

Until we get a house, I don't want to deal with rear speakers. So the best I'd do is a 3.1 setup.

I'm not really an audiophile, but I've heard noticeable improvements with a soundbar... just make sure you can try out the one you want to get. Some of them have pretty low volume limits, and I personally like the wireless subwoofer. IIRC, the one we got for my father in law was a Samsung, hooked up to the TV using the digital audio link.

A good Onkyo doesn't go below $400... and I have mine gathering dust here... soundsbars are popular because people want an improvement from ty TV speakers without having to wire a 5.1/7.1 system.

I'm not anywhere near enough of an audio geek to know much about soundbars, but do they help at all with balancing out action and dialog levels when watching movies? I've never considered a full surround system because I just don't like them, but I hate the fact I've invested in a nice TV and BluRay and all those bells and whistles but have to adjust the volume every five seconds whenever I watch a movie because the action/score is deafening and the dialog is impossible to hear.

Unfortunately that has a lot more to do with how they produce movie audio these days than anything, but there's indeed some soundbars (and even TVs) that have "Clear Voice" modes, besides of volume auto-leveling... that's why I was saying earlier you gotta head to a best buy, target, costco, try them out, see what features it has, etc...

the tv you get what you pay for, the manufactures dont usually built in the best speakers for tvs cause they assume you have a theatre system or some sort of setup at home that doesnt utilize tv speakers

hence not many ppl like to turn on every equipment when using the tv...

There's really no good subs ute for a nice subwoofer, that's why most soundbars come with one and are a good compromise.
