The Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson, president of the Brotherhood Organization of A New Destiny (BOND), a conservative nonprofit, made some contentious statements on CNN’s “Piers Morgan Tonight” on Thursday. In addition to lambasting Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson for inserting race into Trayvon Martin’s death and George Zimmerman’s subsequent trial, he called the 17-year-old shooting victim a “thug.”

The exchange began with Peterson claiming that race played no role in the highly-publicized tragedy.
“This case was not about race at all and what happened – you have the race-hustlers and poverty pimps like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton and others who turned it into a race issue in order to gain power and wealth,” he charged.
Peterson also targeted President Barack Obama, calling his past comment about Martin (“You know, if I had a son, he’d look like Trayvon”) “insane.”
These statements, he said, were intended to “incite the anger of black Americans and others.”

I read that the SYG law in Florida actually favors blacks most of all per capita. O'Mara mentioned that to Pierce Morgan a few days ago I think. Now I'm watching Grover Norquist on Bill Maher (DVR) saying the same thing. Bill is playing the smarmy ignorance card, per usual.

By comparison, here are the Stand Your Ground instructions that actually were read to the Zimmerman jury:

Based upon appearances, George Zimmerman must have actually believed that the danger was real.

so under FL SYG law, you get "faith-based murder", you only have to "believe" you're in danger, not actually be in danger.

You're talking about a different subject. I'm referring to the race-baiters and race hustlers whose livelihood depends on how much anger they can gin up and how much pressure they can apply to companies and government, which translates into a nice comfortable lifestyle for themselves. As far as what you're talking about, the Democrats can take credit for trying to get as many people as they can(black, white, or Hispanic) dependent on government programs to ensure their reelection chances. That's why 0bama was often referred to as Santa Clause during his 2012 campaign.
its not race baiting, boobie. the reason so many black people are upset is because its 2013 and we're still looked at as su ious. even the president said 35 years ago he would have been trayvon. we can't shop without people following us, cops pull us over for no damn reason, stop n frisk's...black men are seen as threats and with the SYG laws, it gives people the right to profile us, follow/stalk us and when we defend ourselves, they can kill us and get away with it. i know race is uncomfortable for ya'll to talk about but we need to have these courageous conversations.

You're hoping legislation will be enacted to allow any black person the legal right to smash someone in the face if they feel they're being followed, profiled, or generally disrespected in any way, right?..Seriously, I can only imagine what it would be like to be a law abiding black citizen and be looked upon with su ion solely based on the color of my skin. But shouldn't a lot of the blame be placed at the feet of government programs(welfare) enacted in the 60s that facilitated the destruction of the black family, producing generation after generation of fatherless young men who felt no responsibility to be good citizens and chose the easy road to a life of crime? The unfortunate consequence of the lawless actions of these thugs is that innocent blacks might be looked upon with some su ion in some cir stances, which is very sad. Comedian Bill Cosby says the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the death of Florida teen isn't about racism.
Cosby, an outspoken voice on cultural issues, says the recent trial did not prove that Zimmerman had racist motives at any point during his confrontation with Martin. That means race shouldn't be a part of the conversation regarding the case.
“Let’s not go into a racial discussion unless we really have something there,” he told radio hosts Domenick Nati and Nate Foutz.
Cosby also blasted the news media and said that he had stopped paying attention to “high-profile” court cases after the Casey Anthony murder trial because journalists were so convinced she would be found guilty and yet she was not....
Regarding the Zimmerman trial, Cosby said that he did not think the state of Florida was able to prove its case against him. “I found that the prosecution did not tell the story well. And they lost,” Cosby said.

The 40-Year-Old Photo That Gives Us A Reason To Smile
In late July 1973, was wandering the streets of Mount Clemens, Mich., a suburb of Detroit, with his camera. As a staff photographer for the Macomb Daily, he was expected to keep an eye out for good feature images — "those little slices of life that can stand on their own."
The slice of life he caught that day was a picture of five young friends in a rain-washed alley in downtown Mount Clemens. And what distinguishes it are its subjects: three black children, two white ones, giggling in each others' arms.
"It was just one of those evenings," Crachiola remembers. "I saw these kids — they were just playing around. And I started shooting some pictures of them. At some point, they saw me and they all turned and looked at me and struck that pose that you see in the picture. It was totally spontaneous. I had nothing to do with the way they arranged themselves."
This week, Crachiola, who now lives in New Orleans, posted the vintage photo on his Facebook page.
"For me, it still stands as one of my most meaningful pictures," he wrote in his post. "It makes me wonder... At what point do we begin to mistrust one another? When do we begin to judge one another based on gender or race? I have always wondered what happened to these children. I wonder if they are still friends."
After several days when the world seemed to be reduced to one big argument about race, the elegantly simple photo hit a nerve — in a good way.
After his Sunday post, Crachiola's Facebook page blew up — as many as 100,000 page views. Six thousand "likes" and thousands of shares. The Macomb Daily reprinted the photo on its Web page and sent someone to the archives to help identify the children, who are now middle-aged.

Zimmerman Prosecutor Worse Than Jury?
istening to the lead prosecutor's final argument in the Zimmerman case, it's hard to believe he really wanted a conviction.
Lead prosecutor Bernie de la Rionda lost focus from the moment he opened his mouth and began: "A teenager is dead. He is dead through no fault of his own. He is dead because another man made assumptions…."
Not only is de la Rionda's voice flat, his tone subdued and resigned, he begins by presenting the victim as an abstraction, characterizing him in a neutral, almost dismissive way as "a teenager," who also happens to be dead, which everyone knew before the trial started. As narrative hooks go, this one is barbless.
The prosecutor adds that this teenager "is dead through no fault of his own," as if the question before the jury was what did Trayvon do to deserve killing? Why even address the question of Trayvon's fault when you're supposedly trying to convict Zimmerman? Even if there's good reason to expect the defense to try to put Trayvon on trial, why put it at the top of your summation as if it's a credible question?
And then he says Trayvon is dead "because another man made assumptions?" Really? Isn't Trayvon dead because another man shot him? Doesn't that other man have a name? Isn't Zimmerman the one on trial here? Isn't that him over there, 27 years old, 5 feet 7.5 inches tall, 204 pounds?

Why is she spitting in the jury's eye like this after the verdict? Legally, Zimmerman is not a murderer, though he is a killer. More perplexing, how does this apparent belief in Zimmerman's guilt fit with a plan to get "all of the facts and details" of the case before a jury? With all the facts and details, and no prosecution narrative to hang them on, could any jury be expected to convict?
But this is not a woman who doesn't know how to win a conviction in a seemingly difficult case. In 2010, Marissa Alexander fired a single shot into the ceiling in the midst of an argument with her abusive husband. A 32-year-old African American mother of three, Alexander said it had been a warning shot and claimed protection under the Stand Your Ground law. She had no prior criminal record.
She was charged, tried, and convicted by prosecutor Angela Corey. Alexander is currently serving a 20-year sentence, not for killing or harming anyone, but for outing a bullet in the ceiling. According Corey, Alexander wasn't afraid when her husband was in a rage and threatening her.
According to Corey, the Zimmerman case was never about race.
There's no way to know with certainty what the prosecutors were trying to accomplish, consciously or not. But it's clear what they have accomplished, and it doesn't look like justice.

Of all the spin leading up to the dramatic but not unexpected acquittal of George Zimmerman for the murder of Trayvon Martin, nothing was as disingenuous as the accused being identified as a “white Hispanic.” Whether it was created in a feeble attempt to continue the narrative of a white racist preying on a defenseless black teenager, it is clumsy, counterproductive and inaccurate.
First of all, what is a Hispanic? The word derives from a region called “Hispania” the collective name for the four 15th century Christian kingdoms on the northern half of the Iberian Peninsula before King Ferdinand and Queen Isabela united the peninsula and expelled the Moors.
As I wrote in my 2007 book His-Panic, the word Hispanic has for the last 525 years “referred to people from the original mother country of Spain, its far-flung subjects around its once mighty, world-girdling empire, as well as to its Spanish culture and language. So Hispanics can be black, brown, red, or white; Catholic, Protestant, Jewish, Muslim, or Buddhist; and residents of Spain, Puerto Rico, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, or other Caribbean, Mexican, Central or South American nations.” Excluded are folks coming from places like Brazil with its Portuguese roots, Belize and Guyana with their British antecedents and French Guiana.
Latino and Hispanic mean exactly the same thing. The terms therefore define geographic and linguistic roots, not race.
So is George Zimmerman a “white Hispanic?” I guess, if you’re referring to the race of his parents. But then wouldn’t we have to label mixed race folks like Barack Obama a “white African American?” Would the media then refer to me as a white or a white Jewish/Catholic Hispanic in recognition of my own mixed racial background and Jewish mother?
During slavery and Jim Crow, and in racist regimes like Apartheid-era South Africa, both Obama and Zimmerman would have been considered non-white; judged and classified by a system that bestowed rights and privileges that increased as blackness decreased.
Race politics stained history, DNA equaled destiny.
