15 Republicans Who Will Shut The Government Down If They Don’t Get Their Way

Republican Senators are threatening to force a government shutdown unless Democrats agree to give up on the Affordable Care Act. Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) has gotten 14 of his colleagues to sign a letter pledging to block a bill to fund government operations unless Obamacare is defunded,

House G.O.P. Sets New Offensive on Obama Goals

    — Congressional Republicans are moving to gut many of President Obama’s top priorities with the sharpest spending cuts in a generation and a new push to hold government financing hostage unless the president’s signature health care law is stripped of money this fall.

On Tuesday, a House Appropriations subcommittee formally drafted legislation that would cut the Environmental Protection Agency’s budget by 34 percent and eliminate his newly announced greenhouse gas regulations. The bill cuts financing for the national endowments for the arts and the humanities in half and the Fish and Wildlife Service by 27 percent.

For the fiscal year that begins Oct. 1, Mr. Obama requested nearly $3 billion for renewable energy and energy efficiency programs — a mainstay of his economic agenda since he was first elected. The House approved $826 million. Senate Democrats want to give $380 million to ARPA-E, an advanced research program for energy. The House allocated $70 million.

education grants for poor students will be cut by 16 percent and the Labor Department by 13 percent

    “His priorities are going nowhere.”

In the Senate, Republicans are circulating a letter to Senator Harry Reid of Nevada, the majority leader, warning they will not approve any spending measure to keep the government operating after Sept. 30 if it devotes a penny to put in place Mr. Obama’s health care law.

Congress Disapproval Rating Hits All-Time High In NBC/WSJ Poll, Obama Approval Drops

83 percent of Americans disapprove of the job Congress is doing in Washington, an all-time high in the poll. Just 12 percent approve of Congress' job, while 57 percent they would replace every member of Congress if they could.

It's a marketing ploy. There are 100 senators and these guys have been obstructionist for over 5 years. That is their schtick so all they are doing is stating the obvious.

No, this is good politics on their part - they are taking advantage of the fact that the Democrats adopted an unpopular Republican policy position (Romenycare), which was concocted by the Heritage foundation to further entrench the interests of the insurance industry.

15 senators in the minority party that have voted for obstructionism consistently with the rest of their party is nothing new.

I am not arguing that Obamacare is a piece of . I agree. That is besides the point.

I am sure that you have been paying attention. The GOP has been playing obstructionist for a very long time. Remember all of the debt ceiling default nonsense from a bit ago? That was a threat to shut down the country. Thing is that the attempt led for the GOP house to make history as the most unpopular political en y in US history. Just because you like the aim does not make it good politics.

They have been refusing passage of everything for the past several years. From banking regulation to immigration, the Hill has been known as the do nothing congress for a long time. When you take the same thing, call it something else and then try and sell it to people that is marketing to me. Of course it's politics too but that is besides the point.

Measuring GOP Extremism: What Carville And Greenberg’s Latest Polling Reveals

It is becoming increasingly plain that the most formidable obstacle to national progress and global security is the Republican Party – and specifically the extremist factions that currently dominate the GOP.

Republican extremism is leaving the party increasingly isolated, even from many of its own members.

Only 13 percent believe that the GOP “shares their values” and only 9 percent believe that the GOP has “realistic solutions to the nation’s problems”

the party has no “generational base” and is strongly disfavored by both Baby Boomers and Millennials. Indeed, the gap between the parties among upcoming Millennials is nearly 20 points, with only 21 percent identifying as Republican – a data point that Republican leaders may well find terrifying. Moreover, the Republican base is holed up in rapidly depopulating rural areas, while cities and suburbs strongly favor Democrats.

alienated moderate Republicans are from their own party, with nearly half regarding it as “too extreme.” Up to 40 percent of moderate Republicans regard their party as “out of touch,” a statement that resonates with 46 percent of Republican-leaning independent voters. Nearly 40 percent of moderate Republicans believe their party is “dividing the country.”

On climate change, for example, overwhelming percentages of Democrats (95), Democratic-leaning independents (87), Independents (76), and moderate Republicans (62) all agree that strong action must be taken to offset atmospheric warming caused by human activity – while only 23 percent of Tea Party adherents and 34 percent of evangelicals share that scientifically-based perspective.

Blogger Corrente and his coverage of the Obamacare fiasco nails what is at the heart of this R vs D farce:
ObamaCare Cluster : One side is lying, and the other is not telling the truth

Republicans call it socialism. In fact, it's a giant handout to the insurance companies. Democrats call it "Affordable Care." In fact, it's a rental extraction opportunity for the financial section. It has nothing to do with care, affordable or not.

And notice how the kayfabe plays so very very well in creating TINA: The obvious falsity* of the Republican position -- a red flag to the bull ted, as it were -- makes the more subtle falsity of the Democratic position seem more plausible and palatable.

Seriously, is there anything about the behavior of either party or the political class generally that suggests that health care is on anybody's agenda?
