How are you going to take it? Current fans of his Mamba-ness fall into a few distinct categories. There are many different varieties but I've listed a few obvious ones below.

One kind of fan, the fatalistic suicide risk, has already taken a fetal position on the corner of his bed and has gone catatonic over what he is certain will be a disaster season for the Lakers regardless this year and for decades to come. Of course this fan doesn't believe Kobe will contribute in any way or possibly that this will be the final, injury riddled fall of their hero if he even returns this season for any appreciable stretch. But that won't stop them from jumping off a cliff once it is confirmed. These fans should stay close to friends and loved ones for the foreseeable future.

The next kind of fan is pessimistic but not suicidal. He has already written Kobe off as even being close to what he was last year ever again and will simply be content with his eventual return to the court. Or at least that is how this kind of fan has decided to deal with the possibility that like a formerly beloved pet returning after dying and being buried in an Indian graveyard, Kobe's return might be worse than his absence. These fans will be happy within anything approaching double digit scoring from Kobe and average SG play regardless of his efficiency.

Another kind of fan thinks Kobe will return and will be productive if perhaps not quite what he was. This fan is fairly chill and probably isn't a suicide risk although they'll be disappointed if this is really the end for Mamba.

Still finally another kind of fan believes that Kobe will return as a Messiah of sorts and alight upon the NBA with a god-like vengeance to reclaim NBA glory. These fans will blow a gasket tbh if Kobe doesn't return with the stats we have been used to seeing. For them, their hero is above age, injury or infirmity and they will be shattered if they see that he is mortal.

So if Kobe comes back and isn't quite what he was or worse yet, becomes a Michael Redd type situation, how will you take it?

Like I took it when he busted down the door to the old man's bungalow and made him act like somebody when were frozen at 14.
Like I took it when he listened (naked) to Artest spill his guts in '08, then signed off on it.
Like I took it when he double crossed every that ever came down the pike and passed to Artest instead of launching it.

    ...shoulder-to-shoulder. It's my religion.

He'll put up 25/5/5, but anything less than a playoff birth is a failure in Kobe's view.

inside of all of us there is the need and the desire to be heard, to have our innermost thoughts, feelings and desires expressed for others to hear, to see and to understand. we all want to matter to someone, to leave a mark. kobe did that. he conquered, he fell and triumphed again. he wasn't the strongest, the fastest or the most gifted of his generation but he claimed that mountain top, not once but twice y'all. 6/24, be that as it may, da mamba kept his faith. his perseverance is a virtue that cannot be measured or understated.

Make your own radio show when you have the time, I'd love to hear some stories, tbh.

It would definitely be a positive news for the Lakers if Kobe doesn't come back the same. Lakers will be a sure lock for the playoffs and will be included in the West's top 4 mix. Heck, you could put them as one of the favorites to represent the West next season. The Finals matchup of Kobe vs. Lebron would finally grant the media's dream.

Of course, this is assuming that Kobe doesn't come back the same, not health-wise but gamestyle. If Kobe stops chucking and begins to feed Kaman and Gasol all throughout the game, then the given scenario is likely to happen.
