More and more, I’m hearing about how great Tim Duncan is, and how great he has been over the course of his sixteen year career in the NBA.

In a video aired on ESPN, analyst Bill Simmons claims that Duncan is the best player of his generation—better than “Kobe Bryant, [Kevin] Garnett, Shaq—greater than anyone,” Simmons says.

Stop it.

Duncan is arguably the greatest power forward of all time and is, without a shadow of a doubt, a first-ballot Hall of Famer. Sure, he probably was better than Garnett and won more than Shaquille O'Neal, so I’m going to leave those two alone. But Bryant’s legacy I will touch on because, to be frank, it's greatness is far superior to Duncan’s.

Statistically, Bryant has been better—there is no getting around that. He's averaged 25.5 points per game over the course of his 17-year career while appearing in the Finals seven times. He's been on 12 NBA All-Defensive teams and has twice won the scoring le. Probably the most impressive thing about Bryant's career is that he is the fourth-leading scorer in the history of the NBA (via Basketball Reference).

The argument most people make for Duncan is that he has ac ulated more accolades than the Black Mamba, but even that isn’t entirely true.

The Big Fundamental has won two MVPs, four rings and three Finals MVP awards in comparison to Bryant’s one MVP, five rings and two Finals MVPs.

While it's hard to distinguish the two in areas other than scoring, what you can compare is a variable like their best season.

Duncan’s best year was in 2002 as he averaged 25.5 points and 12.7 boards per night and shot an efficient 50.8 percent from the field.

Bryant’s came in 2006 when he put up 35.4 points, 4.5 assists and 5.3 rebounds per night.

the guy was clear in his argument....since they play different positions the main variable to distinguish them is best season...plus scoring since scoring in all sports is the ultimate measure of success...

Football is touchdowns
Soccer is goals
Hockey is scoring the puck
Baseball is home runs and rbi's
Boxing who scores the most points
Basketball is all about scoring

when you factor in that the Spurs played at a much slower pace, scored less points, Duncan shot a higher percentage, and that Kobe chucked like crazy on a team full of crap, your argument is invalid. when comparing these players we should look at individual accolades and when it comes to non-team accomplishments, TD has the rapist beat in MVPs and Finals MVPs, which is all that matters when determining individual greatness along with ring count as the main focus of the team. Tim Duncan has won multiple les without an all-NBA teammate, Kobe Bryant has had the most dominating center ever for 3 of his les and the best frountcourt in the NBA for the other 2. so go yourself you butt play loving sexual

Kirby's best Finals(against the Nets) equals TP's in 07, Kirby was a sidekick 4 out of 7 Finals, in the 3 that he wasn't Lakers only won 1 out of them, meanwhile Duncan won every single Finals he was the 1st option, losing a Finals at 37 is like MJ missing the playoffs in his Wizards days, it doesn't affect his legacy.

longetivity...Kirby hasn't been to the WCF since he was 32 years old while Duncan has been to the WCF and Finals at ages 36 and 37, Kirby will never sniff another le again while Duncan actually has a chance getting back there at least once.

Duncan will retire at around 40 years old while Kirby will be out of the league at 36-37.

And Duncan has solidified himself as the GOAT PF while guys like Lebron and Durant are going to pass Kirby's all-time scoring position when their careers are done. Lebron already is ranked higher all-time than Kirby, I know that makes you mad. 2 years ago nobody said Lebron could be the better all-time player, now he already has the same amount of FMVPs, 4x the MVPs and will pass Kirby in every category(pts,reb,ast,stl,blk) and will likely win at least 1-2 more rings.

Kirby's legacy is fading quickly and you're trying to compensate by bashing the Spurs but the only thing you're doing is giving the real laker fans a bad name. Good job, Cedric.
