I'm making my pilgrimage to San Antonio.... I've been a fan for over 21 years and this will be my first live game.

I'm flying from Melbourne, Australia to Dallas on the 9th April and hoping to attend the following games

San Antonio @ Dallas on the 10th April

Phoenix @ San Antonio on the 11th April

New Orleadns @ Houston on the 12th April

San Antonio @ Houston on 14th April

and will be flying home from Houston to Melbourne on the 15th April.

    6 night, 4 games, 3 Spurs games.

Advice on where I am best to get my tickets?

    Advice on where to stay?

I plan on renting a car and getting around by car, would you suggest driving to the games or public transport?

Not leaving much time for sight seeing, but are there any must-see sights or experiences?

Many thanks in advance for any advice Spurstalkers.

Eat at Whataburger enough times to try everything on the menu.

If you leave Texas without going to Whataburger once, you have not only failed as a tourist, you have failed as a human being.

While you're in Dallas, check out the Dealey Plaza historic district. That's the place Kennedy got shot, probably the thing Dallas is most famous for so you can do that, watch the Spurs win, leave town and you're done with Dallas. Yay!

On the way to San Antonio, stop in Austin and I can give you a detailed list of locations used in the film "Dazed and Confused." If not just keep on driving. Austin's a cool place but the people here think Austin is like a super bad ass city but that's just because it leans to the left while the rest of the state leans to the right, and everyone here has a dog, likes music and smokes weed. People think this is unique to Austin. It isn't.

I grew up in San Antonio and constantly tell people who ask me if I liked it there that I didn't because the only thing to do is go to Spurs games. Maybe it's changed in eight years. I've gone back on business a few times and the north side has blown the up with new neighborhoods and strip malls but that's about it. Go to the Alamo if you're feeling particularly touristy. Bottom line is you're in town for the Spurs. Get lower level seats. Arrive early. Watch them warm-up. Pretty much everyone but that got Duncan will sign autographs. Take in the AT&T Center. That's what you're here for. Don't get distracted by wack ass San Antonio.

Find some breakfast tacos in the morning, try Whataburger for lunch, eat at Rudy's for dinner. Go to the Alamo, get tipsy on the riverwalk and ignore the homeless people. Welcome to SA.

we drive on the right side, so you get in the drivers seat from the left. if you're keen for driving on the right side in a busy city then you should drive. the public transport is total .

if you have kids then six flags fiesta texas is a must

when you go to whataburger, have your fries (chips) with "ketchup" not tomato sauce.

our cars have "trunks" not boots

everyone is obese and all claim it's a genetic problem.

try out a shiner bock while you're there. you have your shiner in a "koozie" not a stubby holder

eat as much mexican food as you possibly can. we call capsi "bell peppers"

we ask where the restroom is, not the toilet.

    it's aluminum, not aluminium

the only pies we have are desert pies

above all, we tip 10% for most service (waiters, taxi drivers, etc.) except fast food workers

you'll be an instant celebrity tbh. prepare for everyone to compare you with paul hogan, steve irwin and men at work.

Sounds like a fun trip. I recommend hitting county line for some barbecue. In Dallas, I recommend chicken fried steak at black eyed pea. In Austin, I recommend a Mexican place called Hula Hut.

Do not take public transportation! In SA try La Gloria or Rosario's (good food and drinks) which are both around downtown.

I would try Whataburger once, realize it aint and then move on if I were you. It's late night drunk fast food.

The only must see thing in San Antonio is the Spurs! I guess you could go to our iconic tower just to say you've been http://www.toweroftheamericas.com/ it's a bit overpriced though.

If you feel like watching a movie try out Alamo Drafthouse, they serve you beer/drinks during the movie. http://drafthouse.com/

Also we generally tip 20% not 10%.

I hope you have fun when you visit!

This is probably the best advice so far.

above all, we tip 10% for most service (waiters, taxi drivers, etc.) except fast food workers.
Anyone who has worked in the food industry knows 10% sucks. Start with 15% and add more for good service. Waiter's are usually paid $2/hr plus their tips (which they have to pay taxes on).

15% it is. people say they tip that but in my experience in the food industry they rarely do tbh.

Whataburger is just run of the mill fast food, so no reason to go there. And Rudy's is just ty BBQ. If you want really good BBQ stop by Lockhart on the way from Dallas to San Antonio to try Smitty's for the brisket, or if it's Sunday, Blacks' (can't remember if Smitty's is closed on Sunday or not). Then on your drive between San Antonio and Houston get off on highway 183 to go to Luling to grab lunch at City Market (closed Sundays). Spectacular sausage and good brisket and ribs. The sides are crap.

LOL the complaint about the sights in San Antonio. There's nothing to see here other than the skanky ass river.

Tower of the Americas is free if you just go to the bar/restaurant level.

I was going to ask about food, but I presumed I'd get plenty of suggestions about food.... Food is a huge part of Travel wherever you go.

The Whataburger suggestions is definately something I was planning on visiting... based solely on the number of references to it on Spurstalk.

Smitty's has been added to the list... it's my nickname, so how could I not go there for the obligatory selfy in front of the sign! If the food is good... Bonus!

Thank you. Rudy's is nothing special. The chicken is pretty good but it's hard to screw up chicken, and the brisket and ribs are just ordinary. Best BBQ i've had in texas is Mueller's BBQ in Taylor, Texas. Stevie Ray Vaughan actually made a video there; they are quite proud of that.

Anyway the guy asked where to go not what to eat lol.
