You could be right tbh. Over the past 3 years, 10th street in Mcallen has gotten pretty good. Granted it's no 6th street in Austin but it holds it's own.

Fellow Valleyite here. I gotta pass through Falfurrias/Premont to get to my city (burg).

Rofl I remember some thread a while back where posters were discussing Mexican food in SA. I wanted to post in it but I felt like I would've come off as an asshole.

We have a right to be aholes about the food. We are spoiled. Lol

10th Street has come a long way from cruising up and down in a muscle car and honking at the girls in the HEB parking lot. Lol

Harlingen even has a couple great places to hangout now that I think about it. If the walls could talk. Whew...

You can't even drive 10th street in McAllen these days... crazy packed.

The RGV has grown quite a bit in the last few years... Premium Outlets in Mercedes, and a bunch of nifty stores and restaurants on 83 & Ware Rd (Cracker Barrel, Longhorn, etc).

Falfurrias... we always drive by when heading up to San Antonio on 281.

About the Mexican food, I have some people swear by Ciro's in Weslaco. Personally, not a fan on Mexican food.

Yeah 10th street in Mcallen is the busiest street in the RGV. With the Mall and appealing restaurants/store businesses on the side...you'd get all the traffic

Wife has family in the valley... We fly in once or twice a year. Sometimes we drive up to San Antonio and catch a game too if we have time.

On Friday and Saturday nights the cops started busting the cruisers. That ended that.

A busy street for sure, but at least North 10th isn't a light every block.

10th Street is paradise compared to anywhere in SA or Houston. You can get from the Big Bank all the way to Nolana in no time. Decently timed lights and no median curb to back up cars wanting to turn left like every other genius city does it.... I will take McAllen streets over anywhere other than MAYBE Salt Lake City. North-South any way. Nolana and 10th to 281 is a disaster. Way too many lights...

Well one would imagine with all the possible dangers (drunk drivers leaving lounges, clubs and bars) they'd do that.

The Silver Dollar Saloon in Falfurrias was fun. What a dump. Cheap beer, nice people. Better than TP's ripoff joint.
    Oh, so cute.
    I remember my first beer!

Born and raised. I live there between furloughs these days. All my family is still there. I move around a lot but keep a home there.

Spent many a long hot day teaching young kids how to fly in Weslaco.

When I was a little kid there was NOTHING out there, and I mean NOTHING. Sewer smell hasn't changed. Never understood that...

Flights booked and paid.... This is happening!!!

Thanks for all the tips. Sounds like I won't go hungry.

Didn't realize Houston and Dallas so big though 6mil+... bit nervous about the driving. I've done the whole wrong side of the road driving in Canada and Hawaii but that wasn't big city driving.

mind you the flip would be

Hi im from San Antonio and im coming to Australia, what are some good places to go.

Hi, you could go to South Australia, but watch out for the Red backs under your toilet seat
You could go to New South wales, but watch out for the Blue Ringed Octopus, Box Jelly Fish and white tails
You could go to Victoria but watch out for the Tiger, Copper Head and Red Bellied Black Snakes in the garden
You could go to Queensland but watch out for the Inland Tipans
You could go to Western Australia but watch out for the Crocs
You could go to the Northern Territory but watch out for all of the above.

Most of all though watch out for the Sharks.

    other than that, have fun

you wonder why Patty Mills is fast? He en has to be.

No, but you need to understand that the TexMex food in San Antonio is probably the best in the world as is attested by the military stationed here. They have eaten food all over the world and this subject always comes up when talking about San Antonio. And not only is the Mexican food excellent, and profuse here, but so is the BBQ, and now the Cajun food competes with the best that New Orleans has to offer with The Big Easy.
So it is natural that food enters into any conversation that includes San Antonio, and would explain why there are so many overweight people here too.

As for sights, the old mission trail is something that appeals to the intellectual of us, as does the Alamo (the Cradle of Texas Liberty), and for the family, or the romantic couple, the RiverWalk is unique, but for the kids there is Fiesta Texas and Seaworld, and in New Braunfels you can go raft down the Guadalupe River, or go to Schlitterbahn aquatic park and rides.
The Lost Maple Forest nearby and Enchanted Rock nearby have also been mentioned, but I don't think anyone mentioned Natural Bridge Caverns in north San Antonio.
And if antiques appeal to you then any neighboring town will keep you occupied such as Wimberly, Blanco, Lytle, Fredericksburg, Poth, etc.
I have only scratched the surface of things to do and go see in this area.
Don't believe the poo- pooers on here that put down San Antonio because this is a fantastic family type of city with the lowest crime in the US for it's size, and not known for the shallowness that accompanies the bar scene.
We are not known anymore for our music unless Tejano music appeals to you, yet some of the best musicians in the world hail from here and still make their homes here, they just have to go elsewhere to make it big.

No, you won't go hungry, that's for sure.
Is it your whole family coming, any kids?
And actually Dallas isn't as big as San Antonio, but if you combine it with the city of Ft. Worth and all the little cities in between, then it is larger.
Houston however, is the 3rd largest city in the US. But it also has the most overcrowding, probably the worst humidity, definitely the worst driving (people drive offensively rather than defensively there, and have to just to get anywhere because the traffic is so crowded and bad), and the biggest Mosquitos!
Shiner Bock is not Fosters, but it is good, try it.
And you have to eat some breakfast tacos of any variety, of which there are many, they originated here in this general area and then spread all over the world. Whataburger is good at least once but it is typical fast food burger fare at best, there are many better burger places already been suggested, however you need to have at least one Mexican food dinner or you've missed out on what S. A. is best known for.

By the way, this is not BS as some on here might try to mislead, they can all be easily verified online if you make just the tiniest effort to research San Antonio and environs.

You are an idiot. The military only thinks SA has the best texmex because there are no bases in the Rio Grande Valley. Lmao at the ridiculous notion that SA even knows what texmex is compared to McAllen, Harlingen, Brownsville etc.!

Obviously you don't know what you are talking about. Yes, I will only agree that the food there is great since I've spent so much time there, my family is from Weslaco, so I know the good places and the bad places.
But to compare it with San Antonio is out and out ludicrous because both are good, just San Antonio has more good ones is all, and what's more some of the best in the world. As much as I love the Valley and its food, I have to be honest and call it like it is. You should try a little honesty yourself, it might do you some good, unless of course you are just too blinded and proud. If so, then remember, pride comes before a fall!

@ anyone saying SA Mexican food is better than Valley food. That's such a dishonest lie. I could count the number of decent Mexican food restaurants in San Antonio with one of my hands. For the most part the food tastes like it's been microwaved the out.

canola oil sauteed fajitas with cheap HEB store bought tortillas being the norm in most SA Mexican food restaurants

What? You can't handle truth either?
It is widely known that S.A. Mexican food is the best in the world, and I can attest to that having lived in both areas.
Just stating the facts. Sorry if the truth hurts.

And to be perfectly honest there is not much difference between the two except San Antonio has more of them and better places. You meant to say that you can count the number of really great places in the Valley on one hand (well, actually it would take two hands), whereas in S. A. they are on almost every block, and the best ones are the hole in wall greasy spoons.
And you can take that to the bank, but if you still don't believe then google it. But I don't have the patience nor the time to waste arguing on this subject anymore. You can live in your fantasy world if you want, I know the truth because I spend most of my time in both areas and have family in both, plus I post a foodie website on this very subject and have explored the new and the old food places with an emphasis on TexMex food.

IMHO this is a silly stupid argument. So say what you will, it won't change the facts.
