The key will be if he can develop some kind of shooting range...a .333 cornershot might be enough and if Chip Engelland can't teach him to do that, probably noone can.

Every since the Memphis series where Young was abusing Hewhoshallnotbenamed, I liked him as a bench/role player. Good signing for the Spurs and adds some depth behind KL, which we can use. The fact that he can apply defense to Lebron James will be useful.

This may be for trade purposes.
    We will see.
It is just unusual for the Spurs to lose that flexibility by signing someone for that 15th spot, especially so early, it isn't like them at all.

TBH, Sam Young pissed me off every time he came in to the game (exactly the way I felt whenever Manu came in) for the Pacers against the Heat because his offense was so terrible. I'm ok with the signing though. If he can develop a consistent spot up three point shot under Chipp Engelland then he might be another underrated signing.

Sam Young's numbers aren't that great. They are typical srcub numbers although he did have a couple of decent years in college. I hope this move pans out. He really needs a consistent jump shot and better court vision. Since players have the habit of playing their best years while wearing a Spurs jersey, lets hope the same can be said of this dude.

What kind of defense can Young play. I'm not going to sugarcoat this, but I thought that this guy was a straight up scrub that had one good series against a banged up and depleted Spurs team. I'm willing to give him a chance if he can play decent defense and is willing to put in the work to improve on offense.

I'm wondering if hitting 3-pointers is actually a priority for the Spurs, considering that it's the 15th spot, who will not receive much playing time. I'm thinking that the Spurs are valuing his defense more than his ability to learn to make perimeter shots.
I don't think there has been a single wing who got significant playing time with Spurs this last decade without being able to hit a 3 pointer. Now, it's sure that if he doesn't play, it won't matter what he can or can't do.

Good insurance and great value for the 13-15 roster slots. Nothing more nothing less. Is his deal is fully guaranteed?

Your favorite player... what's his name? That TOSB... Oh yeah, Manu. He played like a scrub the whole playoffs. He only cost us a championship.

I know right? I wanted to say the same thing you did but I'm just trying to be a little positive like the homers. Can't believe how ridiculous I look trying to act like a Popsucker. Remember, the homers swallow everything that Pop and the FO do. Don't ever question their decisions even though the PATFO hasn't won a championship in 6 years! So much for loyalty. SMH

Another thing to consider....Young is only 27. He's only been in the league 4 years. There are plenty of players that don't really catch on until that point of their career, whether it is due to physical reasons, mental reasons, environmental reasons, or some combination thereof. He's definitely shown flashes of talent, but obviously not consistently enough. There is always that chance that the Spurs system and organization will provide the right chemistry for Young to bloom as a player and take on a bigger role.

Then again, there is also the chance that he doesn't make it past training camp, warms the bench, or is delegated to garbage cleanup.

i don't care that the 15th spot is full. beli, young, jeff fill in where the bench has question marks. mills and bonner fill in for a shooting slump. if a good waiver opens up or somebody stands out in preseason... the spurs can move bonner or mills for a magic bean. i love the depth on this years roster! i think these spurs can finish the job against miami. but i wouldn't be surprised to see indiana, brooklyn, or chicago.

My only concern is that Sam Young's name seems to be an oxymoron or false advertising. He looks as old as Greg Oden.
    Hope he can contribute.

Which makes it all the more likely either De Colo or Mills is gone if Young makes it.
I hope we get rid of De Colo guy is a marginal NBA player and doesn't have the leadership a PG should have.

Hard to believe Sam Young is the same age Richard Jefferson was when Spurs first acquired him (28),

Anyways, I was skeptical at first but now I like this signing. Leonard and Young should be a scary duo, assuming Leonard develops into a legit offensive player this season.

He'll be in the rotation. Ginobili isn't exactly playing tons of minutes anymore, just half a game's worth. Kawhi also plays some time at PF when we go small. I would assume Green's minutes get cut a little with Belinelli in now but not getting tons of minutes. That gives Young about 12-14 minutes a game.

When you look at the lineup, a lot of our players are variable. The roster will sorta look like this for the rotation of guys at which positions:

PG: Parker, Joseph, Mills (Mills likely a reserve)
    PG/SG/SF: Ginobili
    SG/SF: Green, Belinelli, Young
    SG/SF/PF: Leonard
    SF/PF: Diaw
    PF/C: Duncan, Bonner
    C: Splitter, Baynes (garbage minutes)

So tbh, I think Manu will take some PG time, Leonard will take some PF time like they always have even though you probably don't think of them as PF and PG players, and there's where your extra minutes come from. After all, we don't exactly have a real backup to Parker and our "real" big man rotation only consists of three guys (Duncan, Splitter, Diaw) and some patchwork dudes (Bonner, Baynes). Only a few guys only play one position (the smallest and biggest guys). Pop mixes them up a lot.

Young will have time to get in there, unload his energy, then sit. We are kind of loaded down with people who can play SG though, but I'm happy to have a bulldog defender who can defend the likes of Durant, Bryant, Harden, and James to take some pressure off of Green and Leonard from doing all the work on them. He should be a valuble asset, especially if the Spurs can manage to teach him to shoot threes better.

So yeah, I like it. More excited about this addition than Belinelli. Hope he pans out well.

Edit: Looks like we have Magette too (just now reading all the Spurs news for the past few days). I'm not sure how he will fit since he hasn't been particularly impressive for about 4 years now. Then again we probably couldn't have signed him if he was. Pretty poor defensive player, but can contibute a lot more than Young on offense. Kind of a tough decision on who would be the better choice. Then again with how cheap they are, it probably wouldn't kill us to have both. Especially if Manu inevitably gets hurt again per par.
