Corey Maggette will be joining the Spurs for training camp. Great locker room guy, could provide needed scoring, esp. w/ Pop's rest methods Jared Zwerling (@JaredZwerling)

    To add to that:

    Jared Zwerling @JaredZwerling
Mike Bibby was invited to #Spurs camp -- Pop liked him -- & had good chance of making team, but can't attend now due to heel/foot injury.

I like this move better than the Sam Young move. At least Maggette can get to the free throw line and will not be a complete liability of offense. The Spurs offense is as fluid as it is because everyone on the floor can either penetrate or shoot the ball or play well in the pick n roll.

All the PG's working out shows that either Pop or RC aren't confident with the backup PG spot. I think it's one or the other because if they both were unhappy about it than I think a move would have already happened there.

It's too big a coincidence that the Maggette signing isn't linked on way or another with that charity game in France.

I really wonder was that link is and which one is is the consequence of the other?

    5 years later....

I still prefer Sam Young. Younger and more of a better fit.

I guess it's possible the Spurs hang onto both Young and Maggette if they play well and move one of De Colo or Mills.

How can they have 16 players signed when they are only allowed 15?
Clearly one of these guaranteed contracts will have to be moved.
This strengthens my contention that Young was signed to use as trade filler.

Young and Maggette are most likely training camp invites. I get the feeling neither will make the final roster anyway.

    Young's contract is not guaranteed.

Nearly every team in the NBA has more than 15 players under contract right now. Training camp invitees are signed to contracts. Nearly all of them have little or no guaranteed money.

Young will be trying to earn a spot on the roster.

This was a reply to that tweet:

Brian Geltzeiler ‏@hoopscritic 53m @JaredZwerling this is exactly what Maggette told us last month when @LanceMedow and I interviewed him on @SXMBasketball's Off the Dribble

So I guess it has been in the works.

Yeah unless the Spurs dump one of Baynes, Mills, or De Colo, I don't see them adding Young or Maggette to the team. The Spurs will more likely save their cheap contracts for a midseason trade.

I saw him play on TV that charity game yesterday with TP and he looked in decent shape. Now, I can't say more because it was a very low intensity game.

If Maggette can get back at the level he was a couple of years ago, he would be a very nice bench player. His good rebounding would especially be welcomed in small ball situation. That's a big if, but you never know...

Thanks again, Bruno, for the astute observations.
I've started a "Maggette or Young, who is the better fit?" thread so we can possibly condense our discussions of the comparisons of the two.

Obviously, the Spurs will have to make a choice. Do they want a player who can hold the fort defensively (Young) or do they want a player who can generate offense, but can't play a lick of defense (maggette). Corey's also only played 50 games over the last 2 seasons. At 33, his body may be breaking down. He's not very good at knocking down three's either.
