government these days is just bean counters coming up with more ways to count beans..a lot of this crap adds nothing to society. NSA, TSA, etc are just a giant leech on our backs that need to go. these workers would be much more productive in the private sector producing things and services people actually want. we don't want to be spied on, harassed, etc that doesn't add value.

NB: I don't fault the workers. They're getting the short end of the stick. I think it's totally ed that they can't work. I just don't think they should get a mandatory weeks paid vacation off my dime.

* "productive" meaning adding to the taxpayers health, welfare and benefit.
I'm gonna overestimate and say 50%. Meaning 50% could be flat cut and the taxpayer would not suffer one iota from said cut.

I would think that, technically, they wouldn't count as unemployed, but I dunno. Never been unemployed, so you might be right.

If the shutdown is still going by the end of the workday Monday I think they can all get unemployment, though it has to be paid back if they get back pay.
The government shutdown is just really ing people over on vacation. If I was a non-bean-eating foreigner the only reason I would come to the US is to see the amazing national parks. Sucks for them.
What about civilian defense employees overseas? Think they're gonna get unemployment?
Moreover, not all of the people who are not being paid are 'on vacation'. Those listed as 'essential' are expected to work and work overtime; they're just not expected to get paid.
