The tigers put it on my Sox . Lucky it was not a no hitter. Did the Sox just
relax too much during the break? They didn't look ready.

Anibal Sanchez was the AL ERA leader this year, so you might try giving credit where credit is due. Oh, and you face this year's likely Cy Young tonight, and last years Cy and MVP on Tuesday, so happy days for Boston, eh?

Nice surprising win last night. Game 1 was definitely not a game I expected the Tigers to win. I think the patience the Red Sox hitters generally have while taking a lot of pitches hurt them in a way last night. While the strike zone was relatively big and some of the hitters might have had some beef with some of the called strikes, the majority of those borderline calls were just that, at least legitimately "borderline" and close enough to call strikes. At some point, the Red Sox hitters should have started to protect the plate more on those borderline calls instead of just complaining about them being balls. And it's not like Sanchez was getting all the calls. He still walked 6 hitters in 6 innings. Red Sox needed to take advantage of that, but they weren't able to.

Things set up nicely for the Tigers now that they have Scherzer and Verlander in games 2 and 3, and potentially for games 6 and 7 if it gets to that. If Scherzer and the Tigers can steal another game tonight, I'll have a really great feeling about the series. A split after Sanchez beats Lester will almost be disappointing for the Tigers. Boston can take some solace in that the Tigers weren't really able to score either. It could have easily been 1-0 in Boston's favor last night. And even if Scherzer and Verlander pitch well, I can see them losing 1-0 or 2-1 games as well. So with such low scoring games, each team will have to take advantage of every scoring opportunity. Small ball may have to rule in some of these games. Although I do expect there to be at least one or two games where each or either team breaks out and does put up some decent run totals.

Sanchez even said after the game that once he saw they were taking a lot of early pitches, he started throwing early strikes. Getting behind in the count makes any hitter less effective.

This thing was going 6-7 all the way... but a 2-0 lead with Verlander starting would've demanded at least a 2004 re-performance by the Sox.

I agreed with the call. I even agreed with each of the pitching changes in the inning. That's what the bullpen is there for. And it was on them to close the door, especially with a reasonably comfortable lead. I put most of the blame on Smyly. He had one job to do, to get out Ellsbury. And if he beats him, that's fine. But the one thing Smyly could not do was walk him. You challenge Ellsbury there. You have to.

It's always easy to second guess a manager's decision after things go wrong. The players have to do their jobs. None of those Tigers relievers were put in a position they were unfamiliar with. And none of them were put in a position to fail except for Benoit. While I didn't like the first pitch fastball by Benoit, he was put in a really tough spot. But Smyly had no excuse. Get Ellsbury out and the Tigers are okay in that 8th inning. He didn't. And what's worse, he didn't even force Ellsbury to beat him. He gave him a free pass.

Gotta win game 5. I feel good about going into Boston with Scherzer and Verlander and having to win just 1. Winning both would be real tough.

If the Sox win tomorrow night it will be very hard for the Tigers to win
the last two in Boston. It's over--

    ^^ what exstatic said beernutts.
We thought it was "over" when Detroit led 5-1 in the 8th.
Can't go by the norms in this series.
I agree it would be tough to win two in Boston.
It will also be tough for Boston to win two in Boston, should Detroit win today.

This has become a one game at a time series. As with the Dodger-Cards.

If the Tigers win tomorrow, it will be very hard for the Red Sox to win the last two even at home in Boston against both Scherzer and Verlander, both and regular rest.

You're kind of stating the obvious. So obviously tonight's game is pivotal for both teams.

But actually, I would like the Tigers chances to win both games 6 & 7 better than the Red Sox chances of winning both games 6 & 7, based on whichever team loses tonight. Neither scenario would be an easy task for either team.

That should be the last decision made by Jim Leyland as manager.

Nobody's going to fire Leyland, can only hope he decides not to come back on his own

BTW It'd be great if the team ain't a complete failure in terms of baserunning, relief pitching, and fielding. Feels like our two aces and Cabrera are the only players that are keeping this squad from being last in the AL.
