"If I could get an opportunity here, it would be great," Maggette said. "If not, this game has been good to me.”

That's some unreal level of respect for Pop. Maggette has been a very good NBA player for more than a decade, he isn't that old and he is basically saying "If Pop thinks I'm done, then I'm done". It quite show how high Pop is valued by some players.

Spurs had to give Maggette a long and fair shot to make the roster. It's mostly because he is the last legit option for the 15th spot and that he will fit a need but it's also now because it's his career that is in play. If Pop decides he isn't good enough, then Spurs should consider offering him a FO spot. There should have some openings given that Marks went from the FO to the coaching staff this summer.

Well... I guess it was a good career. I honestly don't think he'll be signed by the Spurs.

Spurs never set their 15 in concrete at the beginning of the season. There are usually good players cut at the deadline. Meantime, they can run some d-leaguers in and out.

I don't think the Spurs have 15 players better than him tbh. The ability to draw fouls is a solid skill to have that can be useful in a pinch

Makes sense. No one is better at extending a vets career better than Pop. I would not be surprised if that is his next move because I really don't think he will make on the team.
I thought they were saving that FO position for Bonner though.

If he were to get a job in the FO, can he actually still play if the Spurs were to need an extra player on the court? Is that allowed?

If Maggette can improve his defense and shooting a little bit, then I would like to have him on the team. Drawing fouls is something I value quite highly. It helps in many situations and makes the game easier for the stars on the team. For example, when the starters rest, if Corey were to sub in a draw a foul or two then that gets us closer to the bonus for when the starters come back in, it also gives players more of a rest, and it also can help preserve/keep or even extend leads. It's also big on the road. Getting to the free throw line on the road can really contribute towards winning tough road games.

I hope he gets a very legit shot to make the team. Even if we sign him, it doesn't mean we have to keep him for the whole year does it? Can the Spurs just sign him to a non guaranteed contract, or do you guys think he won't sign unless it's a full guarantee for the season?

I think he would have to come out of retirement for that to occur.

Does he have to officially retire to accept a front office job? I thought he could take the job and not officially retire, just in case he might be needed on the court.

They have 14 players on guaranteed contracts. Those spots are locked up tight, so don't act like Magette is competing with ANY of those players.

CM really has one skill , drawing fouls, and that has a short shelf life for an athletic player aged 34. He can't defend, and he can't shoot, making him pretty much useless to the Spurs.

If you sign Magette and lock up that spot, you're ruling out any kind of Diaw-type player dropping into our laps at buyout time. Luckily, the Spurs are a little more patient than most of their fans.

I must have missed the part where I said "omg sign him now!" That said, he is a guy that can provide scoring during a dry run, or a guy we can play late in quarters while the big guns get a rest and we have them in the penalty.

Who says that they have to sign him to a guaranteed contract? Can't they sign him to an non-guaranteed contract and still have that flexibility if they need it?

I wouldn't trust Pop with my career if I were Magette. Pop didn't even know his own player well (Manu) and kept trying to insert him into crunch time situations when he was obviously in a terrible funk.

I still have great respect for Pop, but he is far from perfect in his ability to gage a players mental and physical status.

You still have to make the decision on whether to cut him before the NBA guarantee date in January LONG before the buyout players become available late Feb or early Mar. He might not want to sign a non-guaranteed deal, either. It sounds like he's pretty at peace with retirement.

You obviously have NO repsect for Pop, and are just jumping on the troll wagon to try to make some friends on this board.

He can't be any worse than Jax was last season surely?

I'd be keen to the FO to sign him if they can flip De Colo for a 2nd round pick, otherwise probably want to keep the 15th roster spot open.

It's either he has tremendous respect for Pop as mentioned above or one of those situations where a dude threatens to kill himself if his girlfriend dumps him

personally though I hope he makes the team. Great value for vet min. Just needs a corner triple.

If his salary isn't too high, couldn't the Spurs just cut him at any time after that and simply pay him his dues?
