About the Spurs' schedule this season...

This may have already been addressed, but the Spurs have 18 B2Bs this year, with all of them on the road or a home-road split. That seems really strange. What gives?

In the normal NBA regular season, almost nobody has home back-to-backs; this year, I'm pretty certain that only 8 instances in which teams have home back-to-backs (Philadelphia (twice), Washington (twice), the Clippers (twice), Detroit (once), and Portland (once)).

The Spurs had a home back-to-back in a normal season a few years ago, but those are very rare occurrences. Almost every back-to-back for almost every team in the league is either a road-road, road-home, home-road set.

Good observation, but do most teams also have the second game of a b2b on the road at such a high rate? Tonight is a rare occurrence where the Spurs come home for the second game of a b2b. I find this quite important because normally bench players are better at home which could overcome the aspect of just being tired ...

home-home back to backs does not make sense in a regular season. The fans will not come out on two back to back days. They have to miss their teams somehow.

Obviously teams tend to play worse on a back-to-back because of tiredness and home fans would not be too happy watching their team struggle from fatigue, so it's much more convenient to schedule them to play away from home on such nights. There have been some very rough b2bs in recent years, such as Spurs playing at Denver, then flying all the way to Florida for another game, thus being ed over by time zones as well. Doubt too many home fans would want to go see their team on such a horrendous b2b if they were at home the 2nd game.

That sounds about right. I never thought about that fan perspective because I usually avoid going to live sports events. If the other teams have most of their 2nd game of a b2b on the road as well, everything is all right. Pretty cleverly put together by the NBA if you think about it ...
