Serious question, as I wasn't too heavily invested in the offseason, but who was a realistic target besides Ayers and Beli that could have put the Spurs over the top? I don't count AK47 as realistic considering his under the table deal with the Nyets tbh.

I wasn't thrilled with the Ayers signing either but jury's still out. I know you're not high on Beli but I think he's a decent upgrade over Neal tbh.
More serious question, how does Ayres and Beli put the Spurs over the top? And why was important for The Spurs GM to lose financial flexibility by signing Indiana's garbage time big and Beli to MLE money instead of just signing Neal and using the MLE money on a player like AK47 or Mo williams, for any other reason but to say, I'M CHEAP!!!! I'm not really a conspiracy theorist, so I'm not buying the under the table nonsense that so many here have bought into.

It's nice to know RC put so much time and effort into this off season to make the Spurs a more complete basketball team. Though it's only been 5 games, its not hard to see why Indiana wasn't willing to pay Ayres more than the league min or that the offensively challenged Bulls didn't even make Belinelli an offer even though, he was one of the few players they could have paid to bring back. It's even more reassuring that RC had no corporate knowledge of either of those two players and instead, settled on the advice of the two teams that didn't want the said player's back.

I'm not even sure Ayres was a priority seeing as how Baynes was already on the roster. What's the point of signing a guy like Baynes if you aren't going to use him? Is Mills going to be able to sustain his early season success? Can you rely on him come playoff time? Where is the defense going to come from with a second unit consisting of Mills, Manu and Belinelli? Why was it necessary to waste a roster spot with De Colo? Why is Bonner still here? These are the pressing questions that you should be concerning yourself with.

When you change a shot, it gets worse before it gets better. You must have forgotten Splitter's free-throw issues a couple of years ago.

A lot of this is true. The team had a ton if financial flexibility but lost it as soon as they chose Belinelli over Neal and failed to trade Bonner during the draft. They could have ended up with much better players without losing anyone important. It was strange to see for sure, but the team made its choice. It's up to them to prove themselves correct.

Excellent post above by Hoops Czar and one that likely echoes the frustrations many of us feel. I would love for the spurs to be able to field a group that relies much less on Tim and tony at this point. I know it's early, but still, lets face it, neither Decolo or Cojo seem to be working out. At some point, i would love to see our team make a more aggressive move. Go spurs

Still early but I think the spurs lackluster FO moves of playing it safe this offseason has made this team not as good as last years team. They had so much financial flexability this year but..yeah gotta retire Bonner's jersey here I guess.

Love what Manu has done but was way overpaid for as was Splitter, and what the was RC drinking giving MLE away for Indianans trash time player?

Is the ubiquitous misspelling of Ayres' name a ST shtick I have failed to notice so far?

Ayers is the replacement for Blair. He'll only play limited minutes, and will take some time to acclimatize. Eventually, his jumper will straighten out. He's already a better defender than Blair.

    Current PER:

    67 Jeff Ayres, SA 45 13.5 .568 20.9 18.9 11.7 9.9 20.8 15.6 10.05

Not terrible, as there is a whole page and a half of tier players (including at least one Hall of Famer who is playing worse). And Bonner / Bain are in the 11's, so it's not like there are that much better options.
