contract is excessive, no doubt. But how many guys in his negotiating position are gonna take a HUGE paycut?
Players who want to win in their old age and attract free agents to their team?

The fact that LeBron took a paycut in his prime for the sake of his team while old-ass Kirby grabs for every cent he can just says it all, tbh....

It was very much clear their financial ties to Kobe is strictly a marketing move, the fact the Lakers are willing to throw away 2 additional years of the teams cap and as well chances of building a contender speaks volumes of how much income Kobe generates for the Lakers. Buss went with the bottom line and it's profit first.

Also, the second biggest marketing star (Lebron) is obviously not going to sign with the Lakers, Buss has no choice but to lock up a Laker legend rather than lose him for nothing and create another embarrassing protest from their fans (Remember Phil Jackson).

It's not the right move but given the cir stances, it was necessary.

Being reported as $48.5 million. Stupid by both sides. At the very least, they should have considered getting around or under $20 million per and have some kind of deferred payments after the two years. I'm not sure if the current CBA still allows that though. In reality though, he should have cut his $30 million in half and play for $15 million per. Super selfish egomaniacal Kobe and super dumb forbrains Lakers front office.
I agree that would have been ideal ...but not realistic. I was hoping for $15 ...expecting $20 but $24?!

And Though I am NOT defending Jim, dont forget elder Buss gave Magic and Worthy late in their career ballon payments. But in this new CBA, not sure that was wise.

Lakers should have amnesited Kobe and tanked for Wiggins or Parker.

Not blaming Kirby at all tbh. Anybody who knew anything about Bryant at all knew there was absolutely no way he wasn't taking Fredo to the woodshed tbh.

Now the Lakers only have room for one max contract, and that is gonna cap the Lakers for years to come.

Different cir stances, he had not won. I agree Kobe should make less than Lebron ...but that is a apples/oranges comparison tbh ...

I don't disagree. Personally, I feel Kobe should've signed for no more than $15/yr but we all know he's all about himself tbh.

Lakers will have about 23M in cap space next year with this Kobe contract

    http://www.grantland.com/blog/the-tr...4-a-pipe-dream

Scenario 4: Renounce everyone but Kobe; Kobe takes $20 million

Scenario 4: Kobe Takes $20 Million

    Player Salary Salary Cap
    Steve Nash $9,701,000
    Robert Sacre $915,243
    Kobe Bryant $20,000,000
    Draft Pick $911,400
    Minimum Cap Hold $507,336
    Minimum Cap Hold $507,336
    Minimum Cap Hold $507,336
    Minimum Cap Hold $507,336
    Minimum Cap Hold $507,336
    Minimum Cap Hold $507,336
    Minimum Cap Hold $507,336
    Minimum Cap Hold $507,336

    Total $35,586,331 $62,100,000
Cap Room $26,513,669 ENOUGH FOR ONE

This scenario assumes that Kobe Bryant, who has already said he will not take a pay cut, willingly takes a pay cut of about 33 percent, for a starting salary of $20 million. Good news, Lakers fans — in this scenario, your favorite team has enough cap space to sign one free agent to a maximum salary contract, with a little bit of room left over to sign a supplemental player as well.

    Extremely optimistic result: LeBron

    More likely result: Carmelo

    Kobe’s reaction tweet: Scoring champs. Olympics brothers. #vino #mambatweets #welcomemelo #throwmetheballandwatchwhatidowithit #illteachyouhowtowinmelo

Pau's gonna be like "Pay me Fredo"
Kirby will force out MVPau after seeing how much better he's looked without the chucking cancer in the lineup, tbh....

End result: "Gay. DeRozan. Bryant. YES.THEY.DID."

From my understanding, it was a discount, but not material enough to "make the Lebron" splash. They have room to offer close to one max deal, but they definitely can't do the MIA thing where they get 3 players (in this case Kobe + 2 others). They will still have significant cap space (23M), but they only have about 4 players on their roster next season so they need to fill out the entire roster.

You'd think Fredo would have waited until a game or two before inking the deal. I guess a couple of Vine and Instagram videos were all the proof Ol Jimmy needed tbh.

They won't have room. They'll have room for one max FA. If they sign Pau, they won't even have room for that.
