It was very much clear their financial ties to Kobe is strictly a marketing move, the fact the Lakers are willing to throw away 2 additional years of the teams cap and as well chances of building a contender speaks volumes of how much income Kobe generates for the Lakers. Being reported as $48.5 million. Stupid by both sides. At the very least, they should have considered getting around or under $20 million per and have some kind of deferred payments after the two years. I'm not sure if the current CBA still allows that though. In reality though, he should have cut his $30 million in half and play for $15 million per. From my understanding, it was a discount, but not material enough to "make the Lebron" splash. They have room to offer close to one max deal, but they definitely can't do the MIA thing where they get 3 players (in this case Kobe + 2 others). They will still have significant cap space (23M), but they only have about 4 players on their roster next season so they need to fill out the entire roster.
