    MELO MELO MELO

But as Anthony chatted briefly with USA TODAY Sports about Kobe Bryant's two-year, $48.5 million extension, he may as well have been speaking for the entire free agency class of 2014 when he made this not-so-surprising statement: Bryant's health and performance, rather than the size of his deal, likely will determine whether anyone of equal stature joins him this summer. When asked if free agents like himself would see Bryant as a star who is still worthy of joining in order to contend for a le, Anthony said, "I mean you'll have to see. It's hard to gauge at this point, not until he comes back (from his April Achilles tendon tear) and figures some things out. So I don't know. They might have some plans up their sleeve."

Any player with any kind of leverage will never take a mammoth paycut. We us fans think in terms of the team but they have to think in terms of their lifestyle. They are used to spend, invest and save "X" amount of money. I know it sounds silly when talking about millions and millions of dolars but it really isn't. Imagine how your life would change if your salary gets cut in half from one year to the next, of course that NBA stars don't feel the change as much as us but still it does produce a change. Speaking of which:

at folks getting mad after Manu cut his salary in half.
It doesn't sound silly. Players are contractors. They aren't really employees. Being as such they are in and of themselves corporations and they have to consider their bottom line as well. What for profit organization gives up half it's potential earnings to get a championship? If it doesn't equate to more earnings down the road, I'd say none of them. For that reason, a lot of players treat the NBA like it's just a government bidding system and they are the defense contractors. Sure they want to deliver the product but only at the highest possible rate they can, and they want to soak up all the fringe money as well. Championships are great for all the bull talk that goes on with us citizens about who's best, but it doesn't do for the bank accounts of the NBA contractors.

I would not give a thousand dollars for my team to win the ring. I see no reason to. Sure I like it when they win, but it's a hollow victory because it's not really my team, I just root for them. Maybe some NBA players feel that same way, that they would not sacrifice money to try to allow a billionaire to get something he's not willing to pay for himself. Most of these guys were raised dirt poor, single parents and all their friends are either in jail, broke or dead. I cannot see them thinking in terms of sacrifice to get a group of thrown together mercenaries a ring so the spoon fed celebrities sitting in leather 100K a year seats can text and wear Lakers gear.

Mitch had no choice. Kobe runs that franchise. After whiffing so publicly on Dwight (and it was humiliating to watch a storied franchise beg and crawl) on the shoulders of getting swept and Kobe hurt, they had to ensure at all costs that Kobe stayed.

They didn't have a Duncan they were dealing with they had Kobe. Kobe had leverage and he squeezed the out of them. TBH, I think they got lucky that Kobe didn't make them offer the full max.
    He couldn't:

Two years is the longest extension he could have signed due to the Over-36 rule.
The new CBA saved us, sorta because it still was the max allowed.

Tbh they shouldn't even throw a max contract at anyone, they're not winning jack anyways. Might as well save some money and get a better draft pick while placating all the Kobefans.

We all know the only reason he's even playing anymore is to jack up his career points scored. He probably wants to be surrounded by scrubs so he can justify taking every shot.

Pretty sure that he was referring to maximum dollars. The CBA allowed for a 2-year/66M extension for Kobe. So, from a certain perspective, Kobe left 18M on the table. (He also could have have tried for a 3yr/100M deal, but he would have had to wait until after the 2013-14 season was over.)

Again, this is a good move for the Lakers, it makes the most sense, tbh..

Anybody that thought Kobe would take a pay cut to win is a ing moron and hasn't paid attention to Kobe's career..Kobe is all about Kobe, and even if he wasn't, there's no way Vanessa was going to allow him to take any less than he took, tbh..

Duncan, Garnett and Nowitzki took pay cuts for their teams' flexibility, Lebron and Three did it in their primes, but all those players have different mentalities, obviously..

I meant max with regards to the 2 years. He could have signed for 60M+

If Jim Dunan is making 9.6, and Nowitzki will be making around 12, there's no way the 5-timer at his age should be making 24.

Notice the obligatory placement of the SI magazine with Bryant on the cover. That organization deserves everything and then some. Of course he's not getting paid by Starbucks so he turns that around as well as turning the disposable paper cup around. We still know it's Starbucks, we can see the lid. Those Fraps are good though. LOL @ the "scoring streak" poster in the back of the room. Notice there's no "winning streak" poster.

Those Frappes are ing addictive. I didn't notice the SI issue til now. "The Last Alpha Dog". subtle. I hate Machiavellian types but gotta give credit where it's due, Kobe is a natural at manipulation.

To me it says a lot about the mindset of the front office, that they brag on Kobe's scores, show the SI mag and overpay him. It says they are more interested in selling Kobe than in selling basketball.
