Again, this is a good move for the Lakers, it makes the most sense, tbh..

Anybody that thought Kobe would take a pay cut to win is a ing moron and hasn't paid attention to Kobe's career..Kobe is all about Kobe, and even if he wasn't, there's no way Vanessa was going to allow him to take any less than he took, tbh..

Duncan, Garnett and Nowitzki took pay cuts for their teams' flexibility, Lebron and Three did it in their primes, but all those players have different mentalities, obviously..

Mitch had no choice. Kobe runs that franchise. After whiffing so publicly on Dwight (and it was humiliating to watch a storied franchise beg and crawl) on the shoulders of getting swept and Kobe hurt, they had to ensure at all costs that Kobe stayed.

They didn't have a Duncan they were dealing with they had Kobe. Kobe had leverage and he squeezed the out of them. TBH, I think they got lucky that Kobe didn't make them offer the full max.
kobe had leverage? he couldn't get a 10M per year offer if he prayed tbqh. No team in their right mind wouldn't want him, i mean, why would they?

Definitely agree. Spurs always try to find team guys. Kobe is cashing out and I don't blame him.
Spurs actually know what they're doing and won't overpay so-called "superstars" to join their team. There's a reason we've been in the playoffs every single year for almost 2 decades, and have won 50 games every season(not including the 99 lock out year).

And Spurs have only lost 3 times in the first round during Duncan's tenure. That's called consistency.

Ticket sales? Jersey sales? Kirby is still a top 3 SG in the league, despite the chucking and not playing defense. When players like Hayward and Gordon are being offered max deals, you don't think there would be a handful of teams ready to pay Kirby 15 mil? Doubt it.

Kirby really had no leverage in negotiating his contract, though. I mean, he ain't getting over 15 mil anywhere else, so the Lakers FO were stupid to throw 48/2 to him, when younger stars under the new CBA get 50 in 4... Of course Kirby took the money without hesitation, he could give 2 s about winning the ring.

No one's stopping Miami when Lebron's getting better every year.

it's one thing to overpay a young player you're supposed to build around, it's an entire other story to bring in a declining veteran that would eat up all your cap space. teams just don't overpay for veterans anymore, mark my words, none would give him 10M other than perhaps the knicks or the nets, but even they wouldn't be able to do so anyway. And at owners, still thinking it's the stars that make the team famous, that only works for teams with no history, the lakers fanbase would have been upset about kome leaving for maybe a month or two and then totally embrace every the FO would have given them, that being tanking or having a one star team or a mediocre one or whatever..

Pretty sure that he was referring to maximum dollars. The CBA allowed for a 2-year/66M extension for Kobe. So, from a certain perspective, Kobe left 18M on the table. (He also could have have tried for a 3yr/100M deal, but he would have had to wait until after the 2013-14 season was over.)
Let me clarify. It was the max allowed years for a player his age. I'm quoting Larry Coon, a world renown cap expert here:
Today the Lakers announced that they have extended Kobe Bryant for two seasons. Terms were not announced, but Ramona Shelburne reported that he will make $23.5 million and $25 million, respectively.

[UPDATE: I have since confirmed that the salary figures are exactly $23.5 million and $25 million. He continues to have an accelerated pay schedule, no incentives, and his contract is fully guaranteed for lack of skill, injury or illness, death, or mental disability.]

Two years is the longest extension he could have signed due to the Over-36 rule. This rule takes effect when a contract is for more than three seasons and ends after the player’s 36th birthday, effectively mooting the salary in the later seasons. For extensions they always count the remaining seasons on the current contract — so Kobe now effectively has a three-year contract, which is the maximum allowed before running into the Over-36 rule. See Question number 56 of my FAQ for more information on this rule.

Still, too much money IMO and too soon (especially the bolded). They could have waited until he played at least 25 games or so - to gauge him as a player - and still made the same decision if they chose to. It would have been an informed business decision instead of just paying him now out of loyalty and his past contributions. I suspect making Kobe the NBA's highest paid player was Dr. Buss's dying wish. Fredo was just fulfilling it without visual proof that he could still do it in an actual game. Huge gamble.
