A Japanese engineering firm have announced plans to build a Lunar Ring around the moon’s equator to collect energy from the sun’s rays and “beam” it back to earth.
Shimizu, the construction and engineering firm behind the audacious idea, plan to construct a 400km-wide belt stretching around the entire equator of the moon for 11,000km. These solar panels would be able to absorb more of the sun’s energy as there would be no atmospheric interference, and then they plan to beam the energy back to earth as microwaves and focused lasers, which would then be converted into electricity back on the earth’s surface.
The company claims that this could generate as much as 13,000 terawatts of energy, nearly 1000 times the total yearly energy usage of the planet.
The company have said they they plan to have a pilot demonstration by 2020 and begin construction on the project by 2035, explaining:
“Virtually inexhaustible, non-polluting solar energy is the ultimate source of green energy that brings prosperity to nature as well as our lives”

Lunar resources will be used to the fullest extent possible in constructing the Solar Belt.
Water can be produced by reducing lunar soil with hydrogen that is imported from the Earth. Cementing material can also be extracted from lunar resources. These materials will be mixed with lunar soil and gravel to make concrete. Bricks, glass fibers and other structural materials can also be produced by solar-heat treatments.

Considering that half of the Moon is always in the dark, I wonder why they would want to have it stretch " around the entire equator of the moon for 11,000km. " If they aren't smart enough to know that the "dark side of the moon" is always in the dark, I doubt they have the brains to pull this off.

The dark side isn't always dark. The same face of the moon always faces earth, so the moon rotates relative to the sun about once about every 28 days.
Oh dang it, that's right. The same side of the moon always faces the earth, so of course the other side would see the sun... duhhhh. It still wont happen. Sounds like something out of a James Bond movie...

depends on how tightly they can focus the beams (not much of problem with lasers) to receivers in uninhabited areas. And there would be losses in the conversion of electricity to beam to electricity.
Then there would be the obstacle of building very high capacity (all that cheap energy!) transmission network to be built from the remote areas to the grid. USA can't even build transmission lines from high capacity wind farms to the grid (some wind farms have to dump energy since the transmission lines are too weak too carry full wind output, or don't exist ), nor upgrade the existing very old grid.
The Jap company says the earth's atmosphere interferes with solar energy, but there's way more solar energy hitting the earth now than is needed. The the real problem is the low efficiency of current solar panels, typically 15%, plus lower efficiency at high temps. Seems like the $Ts that the company will spend on their lunar solar project would be better spent on increasing the efficiency terrestrial solar panels and upgrading grids.

If we only had 0.1% of that built and beamed 13 ts to earth, over a 1 square mile receiver, that is still 466,000 watts per square foot.
A major atmospheric anomaly could have this beam drift by a very large amount. How much land, animals, people, etc. do you think you get microfried?

It doesn't matter. making it a reality comprises of so many issues, it simply cannot be done. At least not with a microwave.
Best case transmission at optimum frequencies are about 99.9%. That's in the neighborhood of 30 GHZ. Now that 13 PetaWatts may be meaningless to you, but the earth receives about 174 Petawatts from the sun. Anyone worried about what greenhouse gasses do, should be even more concerned about the 0.1% of this power the atmosphere absorbs.
Again, maintaining a proper aim will be difficult as well.
You know how in the desert, you can see what is called "heat waves?" Now imaging the change in a focused microwave signal from atmospheric changes. It would be impossible to maintain focus, and that much power could be devastating to materials, land, animals, people, etc. that are not designed for such power levels.
Japan has every right to collect solar power before any country since that country is "home of the sun" but even if they can reap sufficient solar energy to satiate themselves someday, would they ever consider giving up their nuclear plants that may turn out to be a huge threat to the entire pacific ocean like Fukushima? no, the sushi heads still hope they could acquire nuclear weapons of their own someday, and those nuclear plants are what keeps their dream alive imho.
Does it really matter how much energy man can get from the Sun?
Think about it, we live in a greedy world, even if we can figure out how to get free energy from the Sun there will always be some bag that will figure out a way to over charge us for it , so at the end all this Sun energy crap will just another bill you find in the mailbox.

All energy on the earth, except geothermal and nuclear, comes from the sun. hydro, carbon, "solar" all come from the sun, food comes solar energy. So yes it does matter, duh. Of course, the financial sector, capitalist, corps will position themselves between the sun and the people to "rent" the energy to them.
