True, but they weren't very good last year when they had lost of senior leadership. He was never known as a defensive coach at Houston either.

Your opinion, but regardless, it happened. It didn't happen with Mike Sherman.

Houston's winningest season in school history didn't happen with Art Briles.
Briles built Houston from the ground up, plus C-USA was tougher when Briles was at Houston compared to win Sumlim was there.

Whatever. More excuses. More speculations and opinions. The bottom line is Sumlin took over at Houston and had more success than his predecessor. He didn't run the program into the ground or tread water. Same at A&M.

You can lol Aggy all you want but if USC hired Sark when Sumlin really wanted the job then they're re ed. One thing you can't give other coaches credit for is Sumlin's recruiting. A&M has a top 5 class this year and had a borderline top 5 class last year. Meanwhile Sark is a mediocre coach and a mediocre recruiter, there's nothing special about the guy.

A good head coach needs to recruit well and hire top notch assistant coaches, so at least Sumlin can say he's done that.

But fwiw, Sherman was the one that brought Johnny FF to A&M while Holgorson brought Kingsbury in to Houston.

I think it's also easy to see that having a superstar at QB helps recruiting as well.

Sumlin has been in the right places at the right times. The jury is still out on him until he hits some rough times, imo.

This is true. Also, good recruiting classes don't matter if you can't manage the talent. Just ask Mack Turd got.

Having a superstar QB does help recruiting but everyone and their dog knows Manziel is going NFL after this year. If Sumlin is using a QB who'll be in the NFL next year to recruit players for next year, I'd say he's a good recruiter

What happens when he doesn't have that luxury anymore? He didn't recruit Keenum or Manziel, quite a bit of luck so far. But we'll see.

I don't think the main selling point is playing with Manziel as much as it might be to say they helped turn him into a Heisman winner

This argument never ceases to amaze me. It's like saying Pop wouldn't have 4 rings without Duncan. Well, no . Sumlin has proven to be able to handle talented QBs time and time again. We have Kenny Hill and Kyle Allen next year. Want to bet that whoever starts will have a good year and good numbers?

Manziel was a Heismen winner and Keenum put up numbers before Sumlin got there.

Well he got a commit from the #1 QB in the country this year so it's not like he isn't going to have a stud QB again.

Well yeah if Sumlin coddles Kyle Allen circa MBTF/Garrett Gilbert/etc. then I'll agree he's a coach.
