Portland Trail Blazers coach Terry Stotts reacts to a call in the first quarter during an NBA basketball game against the Utah Jazz, Monday, Dec. 9, 2013, in Salt Lake City.
The Portland Trail Blazers bounced back from Saturday's last-second loss to the Dallas Mavericks with a 105-94 win over the Utah Jazz Monday night.
The Blazers drubbed the Jazz 130-98 on Friday at home for their most lopsided win of the year, but struggled to put the undermanned Utah team away on the road.
Portland built a 15-point lead in the third and took a 77-64 advantage into the fourth quarter. The Jazz refused to tap out in the final frame and cut the Blazers' lead to single digits, 97-92, with 1:28 left.
Desperately in need of a bucket to stem the tide, Nicolas Batum heaved – and made – a 29-foot three-pointer to beat the shot clock buzzer. Damian Lillard followed that up with a three-pointer of his own to push Portland's lead back to 11 at 103-92 and the Blazers captured their first win in Utah in five tries.
LaMarcus Aldridge, who was named the Western Conference Player of the Week on Monday, led the way for the Blazers with 24 points, the 12th time this season he's scored 24 or more. Aldridge added six rebounds and four assists. Robin Lopez had yet another strong performance for Portland, scoring 15 points and grabbing 11 rebounds for his ninth double-double of the season.
Batum again stuffed the box score with seven points, eight rebounds and 11 assists. Lillard went just 5 of 14 from the floor but finished with 18 points. Wesley Matthews added 16 points on 6 for 11 from the field.
Thomas Robinson shined off the bench with eight points (4 of 5), six rebounds, a pair of blocks and endless energy in 14 minutes.
Alec Burks scored 20 points off the bench for the Jazz.
The Blazers' 18-4 record marks its best 22-game start since going 20-2 to begin the 1990-91 season. Portland's 9-2 road record is best in the NBA. The Blazers, who notched just 11 wins on the road last season, have won nine of their first 11 road games for first time since 1990-91.
Coming up short from long range
After setting a franchise record with 17 three-pointers made in Friday's win over the Jazz, the Blazers went just 6 for 19 (32 percent) from beyond the arc.
Thriving in the third
After tallying just 11 assists in the first two quarters, the Blazers racked up 10 in the third quarter alone – six coming from Batum. Those 10 assists led to 11 made field goals and helped the Portland lead by as many as 15 and outscore Utah 26-19 in the quarter. The Blazers shot 11 for 18 (61 percent) from the field in the third.
Pouring it on in the paint
The Blazers, who average 34.9 points in the paint per game, scored 44 points in the paint Monday. Utah allows up a league-worst 48 points in the paint per game.
Up next: The Blazers will take the next two days off before hosting the Houston Rockets Thursday at the Moda Center on TNT. The Rockets won the first meeting, 116-101.
