"One of the worst plays I've seen," said Belichick. "It was a deliberate play by the receiver to take out Aqib. No attempt to get open."

Hmmmm. Now, is Billy just extremely salty about this beat down? For sure, that's certainly a part of it. But is what he's saying true? Yes, yes it is. While there was no malicious intent by Welker, he did intentionally look to pick/rub the DB out of the play. A big chunk of their offensive scheme involves pick/rub routes, which effectively gets players open for just enough time for Peyton to fit the ball in nicely. Which he does, at an extremely astounding rate. Welker torpedoed into Talib, and that's unfortunate. Welker's route looks so awkward tbh, just take a look. The design of the play is sheer nonsense. The Patriots were fortunate on that play that Thomas dropped the ball, because at the minimum that's a free five to eight yards. But, they lost their best defender for the remainder of the game. I don't think they would've won regardless, but this is just an indictment of a problem that puts defensive players at risk physically, and at a disadvantage potentially on every down compe ively speaking.

    1. What is the rule on these type picks?

    2. Does the ball being in the air -or not- affect the ruling?
2b. Was the ball in the air when Welker body checked Talib?

Let's be honest... how often do defensive backs get knocked out of games by rubs like this?

OTOH, how often have receivers been knocked out of games by horse collars, high-low hits, and head hunting?

It's not even comparable. What happened yesterday is infrequent, and proper communication by the defense would have helped avoid it. No need for a rule change.

After two concussions i'm pretty sure Welker isn't going to use his body to take out a guy much bigger than him. It wasn't intentional, and Talib was a pussy to not be able to take a hit from little ass Welker.

That said, those pick plays are still dirty as , and it could be solved by the refs penalizing it the way they're supposed to. Of course, Denver takes the "run so many picks that it's impossible to flag them all" route, which then leads to the refs basically making it a legal play for them.

I'm glad for Seattle that Belichick is being so vocal, maybe Denver won't be able to get away with that crap in the Super Bowl.

FBB. Maybe you shouldn't have released Welker. Lol, being taken out by smallest player on the field.

Ball was most def in the air when Welker whacked Talib.
In fact it was almost received by Thomas.

My primary issue is clearly the effect it has on the game, and the advantage the offense gets. Yes, injuries, and collisions are on occasion and not comparable to the targeting by defenders etc. But I disagree with the defensive communication as route prediction pre snap is very difficult. Guys are wearing helmets and it's also very hard to chase a guy down while signaling. Imagine playing in Seattle, being a defender, and trying to communicate. Very unrealistic imo. The issue is setting picks, and getting an advantage. Injuries are an occasional side issue, but an issue which allowed this to be magnified on the 2nd biggest stage in football. And if potential injuries can be avoided (No matter how low the probability) while eliminating a loophole created for entertainment purposes, not for the integrity of the game, then I'm all for it.

On the other hand Seattle is ed if their best defensive strategy (blatant holding and pi) gets called like it should.

Though Media wouldn't touch it at the time. It was like he left in thin air. They didn't touch it yesterday. We'll see if they touch it henceforth.

    It's juicy though.

    This.

Fact is, generally all the elite teams (and elite players) find ways to bend the rules as much as possible. Simply a part of the game. Every team has their ways.

Unless you're the Cowboys, then you just hang your hat on Tony Romo and perennially suck.

tbh we didn't lose because of talib's injury, we lost because we were 5 weeks in the zone of "one injury away from total dismay"

Only pussies & assholes play the injury card.

You lost because Brady, yesterday, could not function at a victory level.

both running about the same speed at each other. Welker braced for the collision, Talib was looking elsewhere (at the QB?) and got taken out.
It's being replayed on espn, probably all day.
