Preemptive. In a game that had lots of twists and turns, along with some very b.s. reffing favoing mostly the Seahawks, where do you put the Aldon Smith offsides on the momentum swinging scale? I think it's near if not at the top. Repeat, there were many momentum plays but in the context of the game.....recap:

    17-13 49ers.
    4th qtr 14 minutes left.
    Seahawk ball 4th and 7.
52 yard field goal attempt for potential 17-16 or go for it. Hawks run field goal kicker on the field then call time out and change mind.
Hawks line up and go for the 1st down.

Lets stop right there. If Hawks do not get the 1st down, SF takes over at own 35. Not great field position, but good. And the fact that the D on this Hawk drive had just chased Russel Wilson back -16 yards on an intentional grounding play on a 2nd down and 4 had to give the SF Defense some encouragement. From what i saw of body language the entire SF D got a charge.

    The play.
Aldon Smith jumps offsides, the flags go up and at this point the entire SF D kind of pauses. Including the db who eventually got beat in the endzone. Now he only pauses for a half a second, and to his credit he recovers and guards Kearse very closely. But, the half second pause is what gave just a step of separation between he and Kearse who did not pause. Also many of the SF rushers, including Aldon Smith, paused for just a half second. Again, enough to limit their push towards Russel Wilson. The Hawks OTOH smelled a free play and continued full speed without a pause.

Instead of getting the ball and being ahead 17-13 the 49ers are now down 20-17.
    Huge swing of momentum.
    That's my take.

Granted we will never know how that play would have turned out if Aldon Smith had not jumped offsides. Maybe the Hawks get a 1st down or even a touchdown anyways. I don't think so tho. It was the pause that greatly aided the play.

    the "BS ref" calls.

Carolina got screwed by the refs against San Fran. Karma is a . Plus the refs didn't screw over Kaepernick.. he threw an INT himself.

I agree. Lots of little calls like that aided the momentum of the Seahawks at the very end. Not only that, but if Sherman didn't make the swipe, leading to the INT, the Niners would have won that game.

Can't really blame the refs, tbh.... Kraepernick had several chances to win the game and shat the bed on every single one of them....

to be completely honest, having looked at that play several times, i'm not sure the offsides really mattered at all. the seahawks kept in zach miller to block, lynch ran a short route to the left (i sincerely doubt the ball would have been dumped off to Lynch on 4th and 7), and the only 3 receivers all ran vertical routes. it was going to be a deep ball regardless, and Wilson got rid of the ball pretty quick. i doubt they would have gotten instant pressure up the middle enough to impact the throw

I have to agree here, they extended the count purposely to get time, by throwing off the defensive line. Fortunately we got a free play out of it. Lynch slipped out as an outlet, but we had six guys blocking four rushers. You can clearly see in the replay video that the corners were back peddling as usual. The defensive line however, paused. The linebackers as well, but they would've been trailing the play and wouldn't have had an impact on the play.

Wilson got the ball out in 3 seconds, practically just under 3 seconds, right after the drop back. So, they wouldn't have made much of an issue there. It was a really good throw, the ball nearly bounced out as it hit Kearse in the chest. They clearly planned on taking a quick shot, as the only other route was Lynch as a safety.

However, this was certainly a pivotal moment in the game. Because once you're trailing in Century, it's hard to come back.
