Is the extra point about to go the way of the dinosaur?

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell told NFL Network's Rich Eisen on Monday that the league's Compe ion Committee might eventually abolish the time-tested point after touchdown in favor of a brand-new scoring system.

"The extra point is almost automatic," Goodell said. "I believe we had five missed extra points this year out of 1,200 some odd. So it's a very small fraction of the play, and you want to add excitement with every play.

"There's one proposal in particular that I've heard about. It's automatic that you get seven points when you score a touchdown, but you could potentially go for an eighth point, either by running or passing the ball, so if you fail, you go back to six."

Extra points have become an afterthought. Unless you're up against Lawrence Taylor in Tecmo Bowl, there's virtually zero drama attached to the point after. Taylor's old coach Bill Belichick has often opined about about how unnecessary the extra point feels.

Goodell said "some issues" stand in the way of a change, asking: "Is that going to discourage people from going for two?"

We doubt it. Teams inclined to go for the deuce will continue to do so in situations that call for an eight-point score -- with the same potential consequences. Traditionalists might disagree, but this is a good idea long overdue.

    Well, unless you're a kicker.
Goodell needs to stop changing everything and leave the sport alone, tbh....

actually I'm not against this, Belichick was one of the first to bring this up in that statistically it's a pointless maneuver. BB was saying you should move it back. I'd rather they do that and make kickoffs the way they were before, that's basically becoming pointless now as well.

Let's eliminate field goals while we're at it. If you make it to or inside your opponent's 30 yard line, and then face a 4th down, you have the option to try and convert the 1st down or take 3 free points and kickoff.

i'm for moving it back 10 yards. that still makes it a 29 yard FG

Highly disappointed in this rule change. Nine times out of ten it goes out of bounds now. Kickoff returns were such an exciting part of the game, it was sort of like hitting a scratch off lotto ticket if your team broke one.

Perhaps extra points should be moved back a bit, but I'm getting tired of this guy going beyond tinkering to where he impacts the game significantly.

no doubt, Goodell has been terrible. He's giving Stern a run for his money, but ultimately these guys are pawns of the owners and probably the most powerful owners imo. So they must be relaying orders or plans from the owners, at least I hope so. I'd hate to think Goodell or Stern are coming up with this on their own.

why is this guy trying to change a good thing?

instead, how about we change w/e that ing rule is where you can't challenge a fumble recovery possession that almost screwed the 9ers yesterday?

This, as well as a lot of other stuff you can't challenge. Also, if a team is 2 for 2 on their first 2 challanges they should keep getting another one till they are wrong--don't just stop at one. If the coaching staff catches you ing up 3 times then you probably need their help anyways to call the rest of the game

Pretty much this. Fix the obvious problems instead of trying to seem innovative and in' brilliant.

seriously. allow them to review it. if there's a pileup/scrum and you can't tell who recovered it, then you just stick with the original call on the field, just like any other replay where the evidence is inconclusive... its not that hard

Extra points are so auto that I'm good with a change. No more kicking extra points. Put the ball on the
1 yard line and let them go after it.

putting it at the 1 yard line means there will be a LOT more 2 point conversions imo. 1 more yard for 1 more point...

I didnt get that rule, since when can you NOT challenge a fumble?
What was the stipulation with that fumble?

you can't challenge the recovery of a fumble lol. you can challenge a fumble if it was a clear recovery (as in no pile up, and nobody else was around the ball)

Nah they need to bring back the days when linemen would climb on the backs of others to block the field goal. The extra point won't seem so automatic then.

Maybe do it the NFL Street way. Like two yards for one, seven yards for two.

Or make kickers dropkick the ball instead of placekicking.

Good. One measly point that was is seldom ever missed should be ditched. Nobody likes watching PATs.

The NFL should let the kickoff team get 1 point if the ball lands in the end zone with no one touching it. I believe that's what happens in the CFL. The receiving team shouldn't just be allowed to have the ball at the twenty if it lands the end zone and no one touches it. Make the kick returner work and get in the end zone to either run it or down it as a touchback.

to add a bit of interest do it like in rugby... instead of having the FG in the middle, you draw a perpendicular line from the point where TD has been scored, its gonna create an angle more difficult to deal with

I'm cool with making the extra point automatic. It would also shave a few minutes off the game.
