One of the most recognizable stars in the NBA is at the forefront in support of Jason and his decision to reveal that he’s gay. Keep reading to see Kobe’s amazing comments on his fellow basketballer!
When Jason Collins announced that he was gay in a moving letter in Sports Illustrated on April 29, one of his biggest fears had to be that he would be shunned by his NBA peers. But Kobe Bryant isn’t going to let that happen — he is leading the way in support, praising Jason and encouraging everyone to do the same.
Kobe Bryant: ‘We Have To Support’ Jason Collins
Kobe told reporters that he hopes Jason’s decision will pave the way for others like him to feel confident enough in their own skin. “Basically, it is all about being comfortable with yourself,” Kobe told HollywoodLife.com at the event, “An Unforgettable Evening” hosted by EIF’s Women’s Cancer Research Fund. “You don’t want to walk around and be a s of yourself.”
“Him coming out was extremely brave,” Kobe continued. Not only did the NBA superstar express pride in Jason’s bravery, he also submitted a call to action to the rest of the league to accept Jason for who he is. “As his peers we have to support him,” Kobe said, “and those that want to be themselves and be who they are, we should all support them.”
Kobe Bryant’s Ongoing Support Of Jason Collins
It’s huge that a fellow NBA player is showing support like this, but it’s even bigger because it’s Kobe Bryant, one of the most recognizable athletes in the world. His comments will reach millions and will be taken seriously because so many people look up to him.
When Jason’s letter was released on April 29, Kobe was one of the first to tweet out his support. ”Proud of Jasoncollins34. Don’t suffocate who u r because of the ignorance of others#courage#support#mambaarmystandup#BYOU,” he said.
We’re proud of Jason as well, but we’re also proud of Kobe for being so vocal. He’s proving that he’s a true leader. What do you think, HollywoodLifers? Let us know!

Kobe Bryant has come a long way from his days of shouting phobic slurs on the court.
The NBA all-star voiced his praise for Magic Johnson today, after the basketball veteran expressed unconditional support for his openly gay son. Magic's son, 20-year-old Earvin Johnson III, was photographed in Los Angeles earlier this week, hand-in-hand with his boyfriend. Johnson told TMZ, "Cookie and I love EJ and support him in every way."
"Of course Magic is supportive and loves his son," says Kobe. "Why should anyone be surprised?" The Lakers forward, who came under fire in 2011 for called a referee a "f*****" on the court, adds, "what I can't tolerate is lack of tolerance."
Kobe and Magic's open-minded at ude is reflective of the country's changing views on LGBT issues, and may be a sign that professional sports will soon take a more relaxed stance on openly gay athletes.
Johnson, a Hall of Famer who is now part-owner of the Brooklyn Dodgers, tells TMZ in a remarkably candid interview that he expects more athletes will come out in the coming months and years.
In the three-part interview, the athlete-turned-mogul also discusses how he would react to one of his players coming out, his first reaction when he realized his son was gay, at age 13, and how he feels about the negative response from some Black blogs.
Once again, Magic has set a great example for pro athletes, the Black community and parents everywhere.
