I can't recall when I first heard him and his band, I do remember thinking how big the sound was. I have most of his stuff, and those of you familiar with him know how cool he was and how Tommy Duncan was a hidden gem.
In his autobiography Willie Nelson talks about the big influense Wills was on him growing up in Texas. I was surprised to find out he first started recording in the early 30's, I always thought 40's.
You'd want to mix Wills in with, Gene Autry (started off as a Jimmie Rodgers clone) Ernest Tubb, The Delmore Brothers, The Callahan Brothers and Jimmie Davis (Louisiana Governor to be) all of them started out in the 30's. Add Patsy Montana the first successful female country singer.
Any Western Swing fans out there?
No state compares to Texas when it comes to a great mix of country, blues, rock.
