Liberal billionaire Tom Steyer is laying plans to go big in the 2014 election.

The former hedge fund manager is hoping to spend $100 million — $50 million from his personal fortune and $50 million from other donors — to make climate change a top-tier issue in the election, The New York Times is reporting.

Steyer’s group NextGen Climate Action has emerged over the last year as a major player in the growing world of money and politics, a realm in which court decisions such as the Supreme Court’s Citizens United ruling have tossed out much of the old rulebook.

    (PHOTOS: Climate skeptics in Congress)

He spent millions on the 2013 Massachusetts Senate and Virginia governor’s races, helping Democrats Ed Markey and Terry McAuliffe prevail, and has become one of the most outspoken opponents of the proposed Keystone XL oil pipeline. The group has also showed signs it’s willing to go after Democrats who support Keystone, possibly including vulnerable Louisiana Sen. Mary Landrieu.

Steyer’s ambitious $100 million plan would rocket him into the big leagues. As the Times put it, the move would make NextGen “among the largest outside groups in the country, similar in scale to the conservative political network overseen by Charles and David Koch.”

Keystone is going to get on. Fine by me. I see no benefit to exporting oil. I would much rather build refineries in the Midwest and improve the domestic supply infrastructure.

The reason why I made it it's own topic is because in today's politics a guy that spends $100m publicly deserves attention and he is demonstrably effective in two high profile races from the last election.

GOP minions, you are supposed to hate this guy btw.

Assuming you think I'm conservative I really don't understand why I'm supposed to hate him just because I disagree with him politically.

Oh, and Keystone has nothing to do with a pipeline or a refinery or where the product gets sold.

The guy earned his money and he can spend it however he wants. Me thinking it's a dumbass investment doesn't mean I'm badmouthing the guy -- I don't know him.

Calling a guy a dumbass is most certainly badmouthing him.

It's not good when Chuckie and Dave Koch do it, and it's not good when Tom Steyer does it. Citizens United disastrous effects continue to be felt.

Keystone pipeline hoopla is really about The US giving or not giving de facto approval of Canada turning hundreds of thousands of acres of virgin timberland into a Mordor look alike by mining oil sands.

If you don't want to believe that more supply going to the gulf coast will result in increased overseas exports then so be it.

Is this fundamentally different than conservative billions (i.e., Koch brothers) spending millions for their own cause(s) celebre?

The depths of your stupidity continue to amaze me.

Of course we export refined petroleum products. Do you see this as a problem?

You call me stupid and then cannot keep up with your own bull . If the petrol is exported what does that mean for domestic supply?
