    Here's the PFT article:

Sources: Browns nearly traded with 49ers for Jim Harbaugh

The Browns’ unpredictable head-coaching search nearly finished with what would have been the most unpredictable outcome of any head-coaching search since Jon Gruden was traded from the Raiders to the Buccaneers a dozen years ago.

Per multiple league sources, the Cleveland Browns nearly pulled off a trade with the 49ers for the rights to coach Jim Harbaugh.

A deal that would have sent multiple draft picks to San Francisco was in place between the teams. But Harbaugh ultimately decided not to leave the 49ers.

The 49ers could not immediately be reached for comment. Efforts to contact the 49ers continue.

The Browns declined to comment specifically on whether an effort was made to acquire Jim Harbaugh. The Browns characterized the search as thorough, and the Browns acknowledged that many options were considered. The Browns emphasized that the team is excited about its new coach Mike Pettine.

A deal would have been stunning, for several reasons. Harbaugh has taken the 49ers to the NFC le game in each of his three years with the team. Also, he would have joined the same division as his brother, Ravens coach John Harbaugh.

Which means they would have been squaring off at least twice per year, and competing directly for division les and/or wild-card positioning.

WHy would Harbaugh have agreed to that. Going to the Browns but on top of that losing draft picks? I didn't see the part about trading every pick though. I only saw multiple picks stated with no mention of where those picks were.

They allegedly tried to trade their entire 2012 draft to the Colts for No. 1 they used on Luck. That was reported on a Colts blog around the time of the Richardson trade sourced by tweets from a few sports reporters.

That was widely reported in Cleveland as well. Holmgren was probably desperate at that point after whiffing on RGIII

I'll miss Modell before I miss Lerner. Seriously. And Lerner was still the owner in 2012.

I just despise absentee owners. Yeah, Haslem has made some boneheaded mistakes. But at least he's here giving a as opposed to being in England.

agree with that. you mentioned on here that the DeBartolos had some mob ties back in the day, but least Eddie D brought the joe pesci passion and goods to the team. Dr. York just stayed in Ohio, rarely giving a what happened out West. the team has done a turnaround since Eddie D's godson took over.

In all fairness to the DeBartolo family, I don't think you can be a real estate developer in Youngstown and not have some mob ties. Doesn't make them bad people, it's just the way business was done in that town. And as good of an owner as Eddie D was, his first hire for the 49ers was Joe Thomas, who almost wrecked that franchise before Walsh came along and saved it. There's a learning curve as an owner, which Haslem has admitted himself.
