Some historical perspective on the subject. I went back to 2008 and looked at all the post-trade deadline free agent signings by the four teams that advanced to the conference finals each season. These are the players that were rotation players for their new teams for even part of the playoffs:

2008:
Detroit: Theo Ratliff
Boston: PJ Brown (greatest impact by any such player on an eventual champion, IMO)
Spurs: Brent Barry

2009:
Cleveland: Joe Smith

2010:
Boston: Michael Finley

2011:
Miami: Mike Bibby (starter in the playoffs)

2012:
Spurs: Boris Diaw (starter in the playoffs)
OKC: Derek Fisher
Boston: Ryan Hollins
Miami: Ronny Turiaf

2013:
Memphis: Keyon Dooling

The thing is, the current pool isn't exactly worth salivating over. At this point of the season, adding a big/experienced forward such as MWP/Granger is really the closest definition of 'solid' Spurs can give.

Honestly, if not for the Buyout Period as of this moment the only players available would be D-Leaguers and some really bad F/A's who were never good in the first place. So with that compe ion in mind, Granger and company seem like gold.

Still, if anyone is expecting whoever San Antonio signs to deliver anything more than 5-10 minutes, They'd be a very wishful thinker.

I think a lot of us agree with you. The Spurs, when healthy, have a set 8/9 man rotation. I don't see any of these guys being taken out in favor of guys like MWP/Clark/Granger.

Clark would be a solid 10th man. Yeah, he sucked in Cleveland, but he's young and athletic and would fit perfectly on this team. Plus he was one of the bright spots of that dysfunctional 2013 Lakers team so that has to count for something. And unlike Granger and MWP, he doesn't look close to done yet.

I question Granger on this team, fit-wise and his defense is awful, but for a 10th man, he would be a good pickup too. Pop likes vets and Granger is one. For spot minutes, he would be a decent backup for Kawhi.

MWP looks done, but I wouldn't mind trying him out. Like others have said, he brings toughness (something our team can use) and can be effective as a smallball 4. And while he may be crazy, he's still a good teammate so I don't see the comparisons to that POS Jackson.

For me, Clark is the #1 option. Granger #2, Metta #3.

Yeah, Clark would be the best fit, could spend some time in Durant, George, LeBron and would give us a long, athletic body, with three point shooting and he run the court hard. Not an amazing defendert but still somewhat good.

Granger is second for me too, and I would say no to Big Baby.

I hated that PJ Brown signing. I wanted the Spurs to sign him at the start of that season, I said he was the missing piece to the Championship puzzle. Turns out I was right, but it was for the wrong team. I really wanted him on the Spurs for a while and was pissed when he went to Boston later in that season.

Without him there is no way Boston would have won. He was huge for them as they were choking their way through the Eastern Conference. That also takes me back to the days where Ray Allen was a playoff choker. Up until the finals of that season, Ray was a pretty big choker in the playoffs. He choked his way through those playoffs, but they just scraped through against some really ty eastern conference teams with all those game 7s in Boston and without PJ Brown's key contributions throughout those first three rounds, I think they may have lost in the second round to Cleveland. From that finals series on though, Ray Allen became a pretty decent playoff performer, which sucks for us, as if they were in the West, they probably never would have made it to the finals with the way they played in those first 2 rounds against pretty weak compe ion. I always say it was that finals series where Ray Allen turned the corner in the playoffs. If they lost in the earlier rounds, then Allen may not have been the clutch playoff shooter/performer he is now. All IMO of course.

I liked Liggins and suggested him before, But the dude is seriously a nut-case. Was filed with domestic-abuse charges not too long ago.

The difference between Metta Crazy and Liggins Crazy is how the former actually knows how to win games. I HOPE Miami takes him over Granger.

Yeah, it might not be true. Also, it would probably just be a 10 day contract so they could release him and sign someone else whenever they wanted without it being a huge financial burden.

Liggins? Unless I'm missing something, the guy hasn't really shown any proof that he can perform on an NBA level. I watched him a lot in college and he showed glimpses of possibly becoming a lock-down D guy, but I don't think he ever made that leap.

Plus, yeah, he's insane.

The article says that he wants to go to a contender. Why are the Bulls and Mavericks listed? A money thing?

Granger would be a good fit here. His confidence is low right now, though, that's my only concern. He looked a bit lost out on the floor the few times I saw him play since his comeback. The question mark would be if he can actually play himself back into game shape, physically and, especially mentally, by the playoffs.
