I have not been able to watch the last few games but it appears that Baynes has jumped Ayres in the rotation, has he been genuinely better or is it more of a case that anyone's better?

Well, those aren't mutually exclusive. Baynes is genuinely better, but maybe it is also the case that anyone would be better.

definitely Baynes. though jeebus prefers Ayres, he has some advanced statistical reasons for it though.

Baynes is easily better than Errors, I'm just glad Pop is finally seeing that.

Baynes can catch which makes him automatically better than Ayers. He plays tough D, can rebound, and chip in with his limited offense every so often.

Last season Mills, Joseph, and DeColo all had ample opportunities to grab the backup PG slot. None of them ever did, and Joseph got the nod for the playoffs based on his defense. The work he did over the summer now has Mills as the clear winner for the position over Joseph and DeColo isn't even on the team

This year, Ayres got 50+ games to secure the 4th big slot. That guy likely won't play very much in the playoffs, but if it's to be someone other Bonner, that guy will have to show something in the regular season. Ayres hasn't and it's obvious that we'll only see him in emergency situations when the playoffs come around.

Now it's up to Baynes to take advantage of the opportunity in front of him. So far, so good.

Bonner is the big loser of minutes this season.

I'd go with Baynes playing more minutes from here on, and in the playoffs.

you forgot he's a pretty good passer in the post and is a really wide load on picks.

    Here's a quick comparison:

    Ayres - completely worthless bag

Baynes - not a completely worthless bag

But in all seriousness, Baynes is definitely better and should be in the rotation before Ayres. Baynes still is raw and has a lot of room for improvement, but he's miles ahead of Ayres (which says more about Ayres than Baynes). He's a much bigger presence in the paint and is a solid rim protector. He's massive and can set some bonecrushing screens. While his little mid-range jumper isn't great by any means, he's better than Ayres in that area. And the greatest advantage he has over Ayres: he can catch a damn basketball when it's thrown to him.

Baynes rules ... people jump at him, bounce back of him and hurt themselves. He is tough and just more fun to watch ... our team is good enough to get him more playing time that Ayres ...

I think Ayres has been injured and that provided some minutes for Baynes to step up. I think he has been doing quite solid lately. I wonder if pop is going to roll with him or bring Ayres back slowly.

With a somewhat easy stretch of games coming up, this is also a great time to see what Austin Daye can do. I hope pop gives him a few minutes to see if he can become a contributor.

    Ayres
Pros: Sets great picks, rolls to the basket well, and positions himself on the court well. A decent Mid-range jumper and above average athletic ability.
Cons: Fails at catching the ball; unable to score wide open baskets; often fouls opposing guards to put them at the line for no good reason.

    Baynes
Pros: Decent mid-range jumper. Stronger physically which makes him the better defender down low. Can finish close to the rim with dunks, and can shoot decent hooks with either hand.
Cons: Seems lost within the system. Prone to making silly mistakes such as setting obvious moving screens and fouling bigs even though they had no chance of actually making the shot. Not the best pick setter.

I wouldn't truth either of them in the playoffs, tbh.

For years people have been complaining that we needed an athletic big that can run the floor, challenge a shot, shoot the midrange jumper and finish at the rim strong. Ayers is probably the only big that has come close to filling those needs. Now people complain because he doesn't have great hands. In reality if Ayers could do all those mentioned and had good hands he wouldnt' be the fourth or fifth big off the bench. I like Ayers for the 10-12 minutes he should be giving us a night. This is his first year on the team so I'm willing to be patient before I draw any conclusions.

I hope Baynes is given consistent minutes until playoffs. Earlier in the season he had a bad game and Pop kept him on the bench for a number of games whereas Ayres still got the playing time no matter how bad he played. I would even put Daye in before Ayres in garbage time to get him comfortable with the system.

We all know what happened with Ayres, Boylen went to Pop on his knees and said, "I'm sorry el hefe, but he looked good in practice with Indy" so Ayres is now relegated to garbage minutes which I still think is a ty spot for him. Truth be told patty should take him aside and teach him his towel waving moves from last season.

I'd like to see Baynes get the run that Ayres got early in the season and find out if he can be somewhat consistent. Baynes doesn't look comfortable in the sets, despite being here for a while. I don't know if it's an IQ issue or a confidence issue, but he should be given PT so the FO can figure it out.
