$3 Million is plenty of room to give out a contract with clever contract structuring. And it doesn't really hurt a team long term.

    For example: $50M/5 with $20M g $11M year 1, $20M year 2.

    Year 1 - $10M bonus, $1M salary, $3M cap
    Year 2 - $5M bonus, $4M salary, $11M cap (or even $7.25M)
    Year 3 - $7 Million salary, $9M cap (or $10.25M)
    Year 4 - $11 Million salary, $13M cap ($14.25M)
    Year 5 - $12 Million salary, $14M cap ($15.25M)

That's backloaded as far as cap hits go, but it's pretty even as far as actual cash paid goes. And so long as Jackson makes it past the third year, the Redskins would be able to save a large amount of money if they needed to cut him. They'd even have the option of spreading his 2015 bonus out over the remaining three years, but that would come with higher cap numbers and equivalent cap hits for cutting bait.

Releasing scrubs like Bowen and chester will free up roughly 4m I believe. Bruce Allen is a smart cap guy and will know how to be creative with the cap without mortgaging the future (he hasn't yet in his 4 years here). Dan snyder has been mostly out of all FA negotiations since the Shanny regime but this one has snyder written all over it so we will see. Hatcher and the Garcon contract (both relatively large contracts) have low year one cap hits and are creative with signing bonuses and so i'm confident that allen can get a deal done that is similar.

Apparently we have nothing on the books after 2017 IIRC so there is a lot of money down the road (we still have to pay rg3, morris, rak, kerrigan etc tho)

i'm assuming in your example contract, the 10 mil is a signing bonus (hence why you have an additional 2 mil cap hit per year), and the 5 mil bonus is a roster bonus for year 2. also, the 20 mil in guaranteed salary only comes off the base salaries, and doesn't include the bonus. so guaranteeing 20 million with the salary structure you provided essentially guarantees the first 4 years (minus 3 million) of his contract.

if they cut him after year 3,they would still owe him 8 million (from the guaranteed salary), and the 2 years of the signing bonus which were to be pro-rated get accelerated (total of 4) for a cap hit of 12 mil just to cut him. with that in mind, the contract you are pitching is essentially fully guaranteed for 4 years. its not a wise deal to hand out, but like i said, its possible, and Snyder is in charge.

the raiders are reportedly going to make a "substantial offer" whatever the that means, so its a matter of how much more the skins are willing to dish out

Oakland will def be able to offer more money though but Jackson is a pretty solid fit with the skins imo. Garcon/Reed/roberts will be able to fill up the intermediate routes and alfred will get attention at the LoS. Jackson should be able to have space for the deep ball and in return free up everyone else because he will occupy a corner and a safety. And then there is also the threat of Knee running and buying time for Jackson.

I still think he goes to oakland but this would fill a hole at receiver and allow us to draft all DB/OL

this is how i feel about djax. he's not my favorite player in the league, but he's a capable WR1, which is something oakland hasn't had for a decade. it would allow us to basically ignore watkins and target other positions, which is why i'm very in favor of this move. we also dont have any big contracts down the line at the moment, and nobody thats really waiting to get paid, so its a move i think they should make. not that it puts us over the top, but it would be a big step forward if reggie pulls it off

DJ will be here tonight and tmr. I can see us giving him some lowball offer and him leaving, sounds like the Ryan Clark/penn/Byrd situation all over again. It will be a win win either way tho with him leaving the NFC East

Huh? Guaranteed money always includes signing bonuses. Why would it not? The $20M comes from $15M in bonuses and $5M in guaranteed salary. They'd owe him nothing after year two, and would only get an acceleration of $4M/$6.5M if they cut him after year two, and $2M/$3.25M after year three. The second bonus is an option bonus, which is why the team would have a choice of whether to spread it over the four years or take it all in one year.

Also, guaranteed salary does not accelerate, so in your scenario, they'd still save a small amount of money ($11M salary-$8M in guaranteed salary-$2M in bonus proration). You don't accelerate bonuses from the current year, because that's already counting against the cap.

Per Ed Werder on SportsCenter, two teams that have "yet to be identified" are "in deep negotiations" with free agent DeSean Jackson.
Uh oh. Could be a smokescreen since the teams are anonymous though. Tomorrow can't get here any faster.

Looks like the Redskins are serious about DeSean Jackson -- 'cause TMZ Sports has learned the WR hung out with RG3 in L.A. this weekend BEFORE he got on a plane to meet with the team in D.C.

Sources tell us ... DJ and Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III "spent several hours" together in Los Angeles -- apparently things went well.

Jackson is now on a plane destined for D.C. -- where he's reportedly set to meet with team honchos.

Despite all the drama surrounding his release from the Eagles, we're told DeSean has been laser-focused on football -- and has been training like a maniac.

There are several teams that have reportedly expressed interest in Jackson -- but with the meeting between RG3 and DJ, it looks like the Redskins could have an edge.

    Stay tuned ...

The team with the first meeting usually has the edge. Considering the stage of free agency we are in, Jackson would want to get signed ASAP

this guy will be my new best friend if his story holds true. he's been adamant about this for like 3 days already . although to be fair he's basically this season's incarcerated bob. this was tweeted about an hour ago. in his defense, he also called that the raiders were in on Jared Allen when the media didn't mention about it, and only after he signed with the bears did it leak that the raiders made the biggest offer. he's nailed a few of our signings this year, but like incarcerateb bob has had his swings and misses too
