prometheus was fine standalone... i hate how they tried to shove as many alien references in there as they could while also having stupid like zombies.
speaking of stained sequels, did you see Predators with the pianist dude?
that Thing prequel/remake (?) was pretty bad. Mary Elizabeth Winstead is a nice piece of ass but it ruins the whole tension and dynamic of Carpenter's flick by throwing in women. The worst though was the CGI monsters, it looks so fake, especially when compared to the Rob Bottin monsters from the original.good calls with Alien and The Thing. i usually forget to add those kinds of flicks to best movies lists. did you catch the -stained sequel/prequel to the thing? and alien for that matter
I guess Prometheus was doing the same thing with Alien, but least it had Ridley on board. Prometheus is a tougher call for me because I really dug the look and atmosphere from Ridley, per the par, so there are some great visuals and ideas, but the script is a mess. I watched it again and could barely sit through parts of it. Hopefully they find a way to fix it up with this sequel, it has its work cut out for it though.
there are 3 other films I thought about adding to this list, John McTiernan's hat trick of Predator, Die Hard and Hunt for Red October. Those are some of the best genre films and McTiernan was on a roll back then.

*Paxton shows a bent to whiney cowardice, but, then returns to duty in defiant heroic action.
**The Lieutenant is doubted from the get go & is carried, scorned & ridiculed, but then exhibits extreme bravery as he joins with a subordinate in taking many of the aliens with them when they go.
***The hot chick pilot of the other aircraft is the most intense as she is not only a fine pilot, but, a true U.S. Marine. When she realizes she is lethally threatened she does not cower, uh, uh, she immediately reaches for her sidearm. Yeah. Now there is a wing"man."
I'm sure the State Dept. & the Marine Corp had oversight here, but, they didn't need it. Cameron took care of it.
Oh, I also like Marathon Man quite a bit.

Yep, yep, never grows old. Both Scheider & Devane are at prime there, & lethally abrupt & slick. The flashbacks dealing with boys' father are well done & not obtrusive. Olivier is a bit heavy handed, but, his ill adivsed foray into the diamond district of NYC makes it all worthwhile.
