Damn the Spurs offense is beautiful. Unlike the Rockets, there isnt 10 seconds of dribbling while either isoing or waiting for a pick and roll or just dribbling back and forth near the 3 point line for no reason before passing if off with 3 seconds on the clock.

How did we sweep the spurs in the regular season?

Portland is jumpshooting team , spurs struggle with those that score in paint like Memphis and Houston

So, why didn't Pop wait till game 3 to put Splitter on Aldridge?

I feel bad for them because for a couple minutes, they pretty much had a game 7 coming to Houston but then Harden make defensive adjustments and well, the rest is history

I don't think that last shot by Lillard could've been defended much better, tbh. The defense wasn't great but Lillard's shot was reasonably well-contested.

imagine if ginobli or parker did the let-my-man-blow-by-but-reach-around type of defense.

matthews and batum don't look as smooth when they're actually bothered on offense.
no one tell him that Manu actually does that these days

Fortunately we have help defense to back up Manu's deficiencies as a 1 on 1 defender.

That's why you don't contest 3's when you're in that situation. You chase them of the 3pt line.

The thing is defense in that situation is a zero-sum game. You can choose to prioritize defending the 3 at all costs, but in exchange you become weak at defending the drive.

At one extreme, you can say "we refuse to give up a 3 at all costs" and camp at the 3 point line. That leaves drives to the rim or catches/finishes near the rim wide open. Most reasonable people would probably call that bad defense.

At the other extreme, you can say that you'll refuse to give up a layup at all costs, but in exchange that necessarily leaves the 3 wide open. Again, most people probably wouldn't choose this route when only up 2.

So you roll the dice and pick some arbitrary level of prioritization in between these two extremes which is precisely what Houston did. There's no way to tell a priori that prioritizing three point defense versus two point defense 60/40 or 62/38 is the key to winning. Any choice between the two extremes I described is fine defense in that situation, imo.

Well, I take that back. Any choice that prioritizes three point defense over two point defense 51+/49- is good defense. A 50/50 split or prioritizing two point defense over three point defense is incontrovertibly wrong when you're only up 2.

Lol Parsons was a mile away from Lillard the entire play

This has merit to it, but only when there isn't 0.9 left on the clock with a live-or-die-by-the-jumpshot team inbounding the ball to a lineup of shooters. Nobody drives with less than a second on the clock. You're either facing a prayer like Lillard's or a lob toward the rim. Houston wasn't prepared for either for some reason.

You don't give up a 3 point shooter about 4-5 feet space to get a damn clean look from 3 when you're only up 2 and less than a second left. Parsons was there waaaaay late.

If Lillard makes that jumping back with a hand in his face (a la VC in round 1), then sure, you tip your hat and move on.

Yeah but that play signifies the horrible D Harden plays. Parsons got no help on the screen. Harden should have jumped the screen as Lillard came over the top. For all the scoring Harden will do, it's nice to see his emphasis on defense. Houston will not win a championship with that team. Now, if they get melo then all bets are off
