What happen to the spurs big free agent summer signing? Who is to blame for this signing?

your fat of a mother
Cocaine...
No Boylen came from Indiana where Pendergraph was a bench warmer. He probably mentioned something to PATFO our Ayers potential.
They signed him to a 2 year deal worth $3.6 million. It hasn't worked out. His hands are terrible hes not big enough to challenge shots (there have been more than a few occasions where a guard challenged him ,and in midair Ayers gets hit backwards).
I think the Spurs were trying to nab a potential rotation player on the cheap for a couple of seasons (ala Blair and Neal) unless he improves drastically next year, it will be a waste.

hater, mom said, you have a small and drive a big truck.
You might have the stupids ing handle of any Spurstalk member tbh. And thats saying a lot.
Tiago was about the same age when we signed him and it took multiple years for him to even contribute. Sure we could've signed someone for here and now but nobody we signed would've taken Boris' minutes anyway.
admittedly Jeff blows this year but I wouldn't write him off for good.
tiago was an mvp before he signed with the spurs.
Oh great point, Pop must've just been resting him his first few years when he barely touched the court.
He hasn't improved at all since then.
I have no idea where i got that number from then. Thanks for the correction
Beli got 2yrs/5.6M. They split most of last year's MLE.
Regular season minute burner... aka the Dejuan Blair role as a Spur... he'll do the same next season, I suspect
my point is that the spurs could have signed anyone else but zeroed in on this guy
The Boylen connection is too obvious to ignore, IMO... that said, I don't know that they could've signed *anyone* else...
basically, acceptance of that role includes relatively small minutes off the bench, and pretty close to zero minutes in the playoffs... I doubt many (any?) relatively valuable vets would agree to such a role...
Who else instead?
He does have a fair bit of potential, in my estimation. He's a high-energy player, which is needed. He seems to be a pretty smart player, even if he makes some dumb plays. He's a fine passer who sets decent screens and rolls hard to the rim. The reason why he's a disappointment is because he's been unable to hit outside shots consistently. That makes him a small center as opposed to a decent-sized power-forward. His inability to pop means the defense can jump the PnR, which shrinks the passing windows for the guards, leading to them making bounce-passes Ayres can't handle (but that the highly skilled bigs on the team can).
Ayres needs to figure out how to shoot at the level he teased at in Indiana. If he seriously wants to get better, he'll lock himself in the gym with Chip until he regains a reliable midrange shot. Then he'll get together with his guards and work on PnP plays until he knows exactly how to run them and PnR plays until he figures out how to handle their bounce-passes. (Learning how to be a legit PnP option is something Splitter also needs to do in order to become a more-complete offensive big, by the way.) Then, he needs to practice fakes and drives to the rim.
If Ayres can move himself back to PF status, his value to the team soars, and he has an outside chance to getting big minutes. If he can't, it's entirely possible the team acquires a new PF and essentially push Ayres off the team. I hope he can get it together, though. He seems like a great teammate, and it would be awesome to see his positive at ude rewarded the way Mills' was this season.
The problem is that as a team I don't think we want the pick and pop... we already have Diaw, the much better shooter, for spacing and doing that. We want him to catch and finish at the rim, and fight for rebounds. The biggest beef I had with him is that he is seemingly unable to even box out half the time. I can understand a goofy guy like Bonner getting outmuscled, but Ayres should be able to do it more consistently, and most of the times he's ball-watching instead of doing his work early.
ayres seems like he has potential to be a decent 13th man in a ok team, so there's potential. He sets decent screens and shows a lot of energy on the court, the most disappointing part of his game is inability to hit jumpers, something the spurs expected out of him.
To answer your question op, Boylen brought him here..It's not a big deal IMO, you take risk in sports and Jeff in San Antonio just didn't work out. It happens.
