Game 1 of the 2014 Finals drew a 10.4 overnight rating according to ESPN. This is down slightly from a 10.6 overnight in 2013 and further down from Heat-Thunder Game 1, which drew an 11.8 overnight in 2012. Last night’s game did peak at a 12.7 rating for the closing minutes.

Strange that the closing minutes got high ratings given that LeBron was out and it was so one-sided in the last 2 minutes.

Especially compared to last year when it was a really tight finish.

It is possible that the ratings are a function of finals-weariness on the part of the public, since the NHL playoff finals are also going on right now between New York and California, and that is taking a good-sized sports audience.

I would expect that the ratings will increase as the series progresses, and particularly if the series looks close. Remember in a 7 game series, people may not be as likely to pay too much attention until it is closer to the end.

I heard more people talking about last nights game today who wished they'd watched it than ever before. If you missed it, you missed a classic.

I know ABC/ESPN have the contract to carry the Finals, but overall I prefer the TNT crews both for the game call and the pre/post game shows. If I hear Mark Jackson say "But at the end of the day...." one more time....
