Here we are.
It’s taken 360 days and 5,328 basketball minutes. It’s taken an offseason of regret fueled into a new season of determination. It’s taken award-winning play and coaching and management. It’s taken a perilous postseason run against bitter rivals and rising powers and former demons. It’s taken two of the most amazing Finals games that will ever be played back-to-back. And now…here we are.
One win away.
After an incredible shooting display stunned the Heat in Game 3 of the 2014 NBA Finals, the Spurs pulled off the improbable by playing a Game 4 that was arguably more dominating and impressive. You can’t expect the Spurs to come out and shoot 19-for-21 or 25-for-33 in a half like they did in Game 3. Like Coach Pop said himself, “I don’t think we’ll shoot 76% in a half..ever..again” What you can expect, however, is Spurs basketball: motion, spacing, ball movement, and most importantly, defense. In Game 4, the Spurs were once again the clinicians, and these were the concepts they were teaching.
The Heat are now in a hole that no NBA team has ever climbed out of. They went into Game 4 calling it their Game 7, and they were absolutely demoralized on their home floor. Now they have to survive three more Game 7s if they hope to three-peat, and it’s easy to question their ability to do so after the absolute ass-whoopings they’ve just received.
Now is not the time to be satisfied, though. Now is not the time for assumptions. As dominating as this 3-1 series lead feels, remember this: The Spurs were actually closer to a le last year than they are this year. And they still don’t have it.
San Antonio was mere inches away from the gold last season. They could see it from the goddamn bench. It was so close they could probably taste it. And it all got ripped away.
Now the Spurs need to win one more whole game again, and don’t count these Heat out. They are the one team in the league capable of flipping the switch and suddenly becoming gangbusters, and you know the NBA wouldn’t mind helping them along the way if it means another blockbuster Game 7. The Spurs must maintain their focus and be prepared for this to be a battle to the death.
Fortunately, I take comfort in this one fact: if there is one person in this world who really truly understands this…it’s Tim Duncan.
Here we are again.
Go get it, Timmy.
