Former Steelers quarterback Terry Bradshaw says current Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning is great — as long as you stop watching after the regular season ends.
Bradshaw said during his one-man show, America’s Favorite Dumb Blonde, that he views Manning as a regular-season star and a playoff choker.
“Peyton Manning, considered the best quarterback to play the game today. Nobody would argue with that — if you like winning good during the season and losing Super Bowls, that’s your guy,” Bradshaw said, via PFT Commenter.
Bradshaw rarely misses an opportunity to say that quarterbacks are judged based on winning Super Bowls, a viewpoint that may be slightly self-serving considering that Bradshaw, with four Super Bowl rings, is tied with Joe Montana for the most for any quarterback.
Of course, Bradshaw won those Super Bowl rings because he was on the best teams, not because he himself was the best quarterback. Although Bradshaw does have two Super Bowl MVPs to his credit, the 1970s Steelers won Super Bowls first and foremost with their defense. People forget that in 1974, the year the Steelers won their first Super Bowl, Bradshaw was only the starter for half the regular season, and the Steelers actually had a better record in the games he missed than the games he started. People forget that if Bradshaw hadn’t played so badly in so many playoff games, the Steelers could have won more than four Super Bowls: Among Bradshaw’s postseason stat lines were a 5-for-10, 80-yard, one-touchdown, two-interception game in a loss to the Dolphins, a 12-for-25, 167-yard, two-touchdown, three-interception game in a loss to the Raiders, a 14-for-35, 176-yard, zero-touchdown, one-interception game in another loss to the Raiders, and a 19-for-37, 177-yard, one-touchdown, three-interception game in a loss to the Broncos.
For a guy who has a reputation as a clutch performer in big games, Bradshaw sure did turn in a lot of multiple-interception games in playoff losses.
But while Manning’s passing stats dwarf Bradshaw’s, and Manning’s regular-season accomplishments (including five MVPs and seven first-team All-Pros) far surpass those of Bradshaw (one MVP and one All-Pro), Bradshaw does have those four shiny rings on his fingers, while Manning only has one. That’s something Bradshaw will continue to remind audiences of, every chance he gets.

When you have a defense with one of the truly great defensive lines ever with Ernie Holmes, Dwight "Mad Dog" White, L.C. Greenwood and HOFer "Mean" Joe Greene, a linebacker gang with HOFers Jack Lambert and Jack Ham and one of the great DB's ever HOFer Mel Blount you are going to be winning Superbowls. Now add a HOF center in Mike Webster, a HOF running back in Franco Haarris, a 1000 yard running back in Rocky Bliear and two HOF receivers in John Stallworth and Lynn Swan (hmmmm?) you are going to be winning Superbowls.
Sure Manning had an offense on that level but a huge difference on the defensive side. A huge difference! Put Bradshaw on any other team and we aren't talking about him because he'd be a nobody. Put Manning or any decent QB on that Steeler team and they have 4 Superbowl rings.
Only the 60's Packers with their ten HOFers compare to those 70's Steeler teams.

What gets lost is for decades the Steelers were the laughing stock of the league, actually started off as the Pittsburg Pirates. From 1933-1972 only had one season with more than 8 wins. Their only star was a bruising fullback John Henry Johnson an x-Niner.

Then if it's Russell Wilson...NOW...it's all about defense, right? Just not when it's Peyton Manning....right? The Broncos gave up 24.9 points a game last season, now think half pint.

Bradshaw would be without an NFL job in todays NFL
Bradshaw succeeded behind a legendary defense and a legendary running back and really wasn't a driving factor in the steelers success. He did make a big throw here and there but was by in large a replacement level talent

I still think however that regardless of what the Broncos did this offseason (which was awesome), the Seahawks, 49ers, and probably the Cardinals would still win against the Broncos in a big game this season.
Cardinals is kinda stretch. But Saints/Packers & even Panthers. Yes

I don't think Bradshaw gets as much credit for the Steelers success as he deserves, tbh. He called his own plays- which a lot of QBs didn't do even then- and he made a lot of big plays in their Super Bowl wins, particularly the last three when the Cowboys and Rams pretty much bottled up Franco Harris and Pittsburgh had to throw the ball to win. The Steelers didn't start winning championships until Bradshaw matured and nailed down the starting QB spot. He was a big factor in their success and also one of the most gifted athletes to ever play the position in terms of mobility and arm strength.

Plus the era he played in defenders could do whatever they wanted. The league is pussified now making the pass defense watered down. Peyton's neck wouldn't have lasted long enough to break all these records he is doing now.

To be fair, Peyton would've never played a down for the Broncos in the 70s with that neck issue. He would've been dunzo right when he needed that surgery. Why does Celestial Nation keep bringing up Kobe? In a thread about Bradshaw and Manning? Guess all that bonchon has gotten to his brain. Funny that a Charger fan should ever talk about winning. Their lone Super Bowl appearance was a farce and a raping more epic than what their AFC West counterparts got this past season.
Bradshaw just sounds bitter as usual.
