I was hoping someone would when i saw this live on saturday. Although it'd have been much better if Messi had scored that and the crowd had been going crazy in the background tbh

true. Is this not in the US history books? The red army was at the doorsteps about to come in and raze entire german population.

Red Army would have made The Holocaust seem like toddler's play imo

is this not in the US history books??

In grade school, Eastern Front is treated as an after thought. D-Day is viewed as the turning point of the War.

You have to take History in College to get a more realistic perspective.

D-Day led to a second front being opened up against the Germans; it was hugely consequential. With that the allies also bombed the out of Berlin to prep it for the Soviets so that they would take the big casualties.

It's done to discredit the Soviets. Also to avoid questioning why it took so long to USA get involved and ultimately why they landed on Europe at all (Keep USSR from moving West)

Hitler gave up on the West at that point. He was practically begging for the Allies to reach Berlin first.

the fighting in the Western front was about 5 times smaller than the Eastern front. 35 million Russians died in that conflict.

there is a reason Germany chose to conquer the West, rather than East

Man, I hope the US at least ties Germany. It would suck to not get a point after that late goal vs. Portugal.

The Soviets were part of the Allies.

Moreover, Hitler didn't give up on the West immediately after D-Day... the battle of the bulge? He had to devote resources to try and break up the western allies.

Taking the most casualties doesn't mean you win the war. Besides, you're thinking of Hitler's main offensive on the Soviets (i.e, Stalingrad). They didn't take nearly as many fatal causalities (less than 100K) in the Battle of Berlin.

it wasn't about entering Berlin. It was about fighting more than the rest of the Allies combined, giving free hand to your generals to wage the war and coming out with the most territory, largest tank army and most experience combat army in the world. Russians also inflicted 5 times the casualties than the rest of the allies combined.

tbh the allies just supported the Russian invasion.

lol, wut? Germany absolutely tried to conquer the east, their advance to Moscow got stopped by the Russian winter and the soviet/siberian reinforcements who were ready for those conditions.

mmm you got half the story right. Stalin moved his factories to the east so they can keep producing weapons to take the land back, and they did.

The Soviets made it into a war of attrition on the Eastern front... but USA got the ultimate victory. Soviets took the most casualties and did the dirty work. Soviet Union eventually collapsed. Germany was reunited (like USA wanted all along to keep Soviets from taking it over) and USA emerged as sole super power.
