2nds in the NBA are by in large throwaways, especially for teams that are going to make the postseason
What I'm saying is, the upside of the Mavs deal and NY differs greatly to me. Lebron/Melo are not FA's when NY has cap space. Calderon being good is of no concern because they will still suck this year and you aren't winning with a Calderon on your team.
But people claiming that "NY DUMPED Felton" is what makes no sense. Dallas lost 3M in cap space in a year they have a lot of it, but that was because the upside of their move was very high (Chandler + FA's from this year to pair with Dirk/Monta). NY on the other hand only shaved payroll in a year where that doesn't help them and took a hit (regardless of actual impact) in year that hurts them all for the the upside of missing this playoffs, having Calderon as your centerpiece and unknowns as FA's a year later with no building blocks (2nd round picks and no first rounders).

It's 34 and 51. High-seconds are never throwaways, and that's even more true in this draft.
Mavs haven't made a decent draft since 2003 when they picked Josh Howard. These picks have little value other than facilitating a trade. If Knicks demanded this because they knew how much Dallas want a defensive big. It really doesn't matter if other teams are after him. It would be like getting lost in a desert and coming across a dude with water. He can jack the price even though you are the only customer because he know you need what he has desperately.
They weren't winning this season no matter what. So they may as well secure a good 2015 piece in addition to three assets and a mid-second-rounder. So now they have one member of their 2015 starting lineup (along with Hardaway potentially). That's one more than they had before they made this trade.
Is Dallas in better shape than New York? Yes, but that was true before this trade as well.
The Mavs could be great next year if they pick up Melo or Deng
Chandler
Nowitzki
Deng/Melo
Ellis
Felton
The main issue is their back court, but there's a good mix of offense with Dirk/Ellis and defense with Chandler/Deng. If they can find a way to somehow upgrade that back court a little they look scary.
Weird how Mav fans are more hyped now about getting Chandler than in the summer of 2010 tbh![]()
We're not Cuban. We were crushed by the decision in 2011.
their selection of Devin in 05 was a solid one imho, but yeah, they haven't made a decent draft since 05.
No one said we'd make fatass Felton our starting PG imho. We have Harris who's going to re-sign with us cheap (maybe 3m/yr at most), and we're going to land one superstar FA (either Melo or Satan) or two all-star caliber players like Deng. Either way, the Mavs are stacked and the rest of the league are ed.
