As the calendar rolls into July, two big events come around in the National Basketball Association. Free agency is here and it can change the landscape of not only one team, but also the entire NBA.

On the other hand, July means summer league basketball is right around the corner. For rookies, future prospects, or veterans looking to make a team, summer league is of vital importance to them and their respective franchises.

As of now, here is the San Antonio Spurs current (reported) summer league roster.

    Vander Blue

    Guard, 6-4, Marquette

    Kyle Anderson

    Forward, 6-9, UCLA

    Marcus Denmon

    Guard, 6-3, Missouri

    Deshaun Thomas

    Forward, 6-7, Ohio State

    Melvin Ejim

    Forward, 6-6, Iowa State

    Darington Hobson

    Forward, 6-7, New Mexico

    Bryce Cotton

    Guard, 6-1, Providence

    Durand Scott

    Guard, 6-5, Miami

    Viktor Gaddefors

    Forward, 6-8, Sweden

    Nobel Boungou Colo

    Forward, 6-8, France

There are a number of intriguing prospects on the summer league roster. In fact, this could be the deepest summer league roster to date. Bryce Cotton, a point guard out of Providence, is the reigning Big East Tournament MVP. His future teammate, Melvin Ejim, is the reigning Big 12 Player of the Year. Both were passed on in the draft due to size, not for lack of skills and scoring. In 2010, Darington Hobson claimed his le as the Mountain West Player of the Year. Yes, that is three outstanding accomplishments on the roster.

Kyle Anderson, the San Antonio Spurs first round pick in 2014, will also join the roster. Anderson, ecstatic to be on the Spurs, is of the point-forward mold and will look to impress to solidify his roster spot on the Spurs.

Deshaun Thomas is an interesting case. Thomas is currently looking to make the jump to the NBA, and the Spurs own his rights after selecting him in the 2013 NBA Draft. Thomas was one the leaders and best players last summer, however, with roster spots seemingly limited after Austin Daye was picked up, Thomas will have to thoroughly impress and show off his improvement to be selected on the Spurs fall squad.

Vander Blue bounced around the D-League last year, not for his lack of athleticism. Blue’s size is a big issue, and is somewhat limited on the offensive end. Speaking of size, Marcus Denmon makes his return to the Spurs summer league roster. Denmon well very likely never make it in the NBA due to his height and inability to run a team as a point guard. Nevertheless, the Spurs did draft him in 2012, so he will do everything he can for the team in his limited opportunities, hoping to land an NBA gig.

Durand Scott is another returnee to the Spurs summer league roster. The forward out of Miami was limited in his minutes last season, and will most likely play the same role this coming summer.

Lastly, two international players make their summer league debuts. Gaddefors, a swingman out of Sweden, went undrafted last week, but possesses strong athleticism and physical tools. Boungou Colo, not to be confused with Nando De Colo, is a 26 year old swingman out of France, averaged 18 points a game and scores at an efficient rate (49%).

Some height will most likely be added to the roster in the next coming days, but expect this to be the main bulk of the roster. For the Spurs sake, it seems like Thomas and Anderson have the most to prove in their futures with the organization. Cotton is facing some heat from the Spurs as well, as another prospect worth keeping an eye on. The rest are playing for their NBA futures, however not likely with the Spurs themselves, unless they are absolutely dominant.

As the roster continues to clear up, keep checking Project Spurs for additions to the team.

Don't see anyone outside of Anderson making the team. Could easily get five camp invites and subsequently some Toros out of this crop.

Deshaun Thomas was highly overrated in HS. He bullied his way to get buckets, and he was slow. Got to college, played off of Jared Sullinger, and always had a couple of athletic above-average wings. Turned in to a long two point shooter off screens. Trash defense. below avg 3pt shooter. SLOWMOFO is his nickname

With Mills being out and Manu maybe needing time to recover from playing this summer, I hope players like Cojo and Beli can step up next season. For the summer roster I'm interested in seeing Cotton and Ejim perform as well as the draft picks Anderson and Thomas.

Cotton has now signed a 2-year partially guaranteed deal.
