Whose team was performing better, Leos argentina or Maradonas though..
hard to imagine maradona dragging these scrubs aside to the finals. They say maradona had no star teammates, but Im sure he had a really solid team that played like a team.

Maradona had men besides him. The Midget has barely a bunch of gots next to him. Not sure what they are feeding the kids in Argentina these days but it sure is not Bife de Chorizo with a side of Steroids like before

Messi has a much more stacked team tbh
But Diego's Argentina played like a team
Let's make an honest revision:
Pumpido > Romero
Cuciuffo> Fernandez
Brown > Garay
Ruggeri > Rojo
Giusti < Zabaleta
Olarticoechea < Di Maria
Enrique > Gago
Batista < Mascherano
Burruchaga > Lavezzi
Valdano > Higuain
Fixed it for you fanboy
That '86 team had two rock solid CBs in Ruggeri-Brown and the midfield had also two solid ball-recover guys in Batista-Enrique. This team doesn't have that. Mascherano is probably the closest to the Enrique role, but he's pretty much all alone in the middle.
On paper, the offense is better in this team. Burruchaga role would be akin to Di Maria, and Di Maria, again, on paper, is the faster player with the better shot. Burru played a great world cup tho, including the game-winner in the Finals against Germany. Valdano and Higuain is a wash, pretty much. Valdano was awful that world cup (check the end of that video above, the goal he misses is unbelievable).
Diego was just way more active (high) that Messi. Again, if you check the video, he didn't wait for teammates to get him the ball. He would make himself available and just carry the team. Dieguito always had big balls, tbh
lol Gago being better than one of the greatest right midfielders in Argentina's history.
Also, Burruchaga on that WC was a beast. Better sidekick than anything Messi has had till now.
the goods

messi has names on his team, but those names have played like dog ahit aside from maybe di maria who redeemed himself in et.
Neither you nor him know half of that '86 Argentina team.![]()
“Diego naturally took responsibility. Instead Messi plays a part, in the operation of an orchestra.” - Luis Menotti
overrated midget
86 Argentina without Pibe is as good as today's argentina without midget tbh
2 average-good teams. a wash. they would probably tie 0-0 if they played each other. and they would go to penalties where the 86 would prevail![]()
This is a bit mixed up... Argentina '86 was more like this:
It's a little different shape than the current roster, and Maradona had freedom to come all the way back to the midfield if he wanted to. He sometimes would switch positions with Burruchaga.Code:Pumpido Cuciuffo - Brown - Ruggeri - Garre/Olarticoechea Enrique - Batista - Giusti Burruchaga Maradona - Valdano
But basically:
Cuciuffo = Zabaleta
Brown = Garay
Ruggeri = Fernandez
Garre/Olarticoechea = Rojo
The middle-offense changes. We had one more defender in the middle and one less forward.
Nope, it was 5-3-2
Pumpido
Giusti Cuciuffo Brown Rugeri Olarticoechea
Enrique Batista
Burruchaga
Maradona Valdano
As a non-Argentina and too young arround that time, I always got Batista and Batistuta confused. They were in seperate eras and didn't overlap right?![]()
batista= boring mofo, slow, midfield scrub batistuta=one of the best CF to ever play the game.
You got it almost right... Ricardo Giusti was a defensive midfielder (look him up, he played with Marangoni and Bochini in the early 80's Independiente).
BUT, Bilardo liked to switch between 4 in the back (with Giusti in the middle) and 5 in the back (with Brown playing sweeper, and Ruggeri and Giusti in front of him.
Bilardo the person will always get a lot of , but as a coach, he was very detailed on what he wanted to do, and his squads were fairly flexible. Most people don't remember, but that's a big reason we even sniffed the Final in 1990.
1986 supporting cast > 2014 supporting cast IMO..... still Diego > Messi, but different players, the game itself is different now..... can't compare them tbh. I'm sure Missi knows and acknowledges Diego is and will always be the GOAT in pure "futbol" terms and natural talent.
Batista would get raped in todays soccer tbh.... dude was super slow.
