Batista was a boss in midfield, tbh.
Checho was amazing that world cup, and I remember Bilardo saying Batista would refuse to share the middle with Giusti or Enrique, that's why he had to move them to the sides.

You got it almost right... Ricardo Giusti was a defensive midfielder (look him up, he played with Marangoni and Bochini in the early 80's Independiente).

BUT, Bilardo liked to switch between 4 in the back (with Giusti in the middle) and 5 in the back (with Brown playing sweeper, and Ruggeri and Giusti in front of him.

Bilardo the person will always get a lot of , but as a coach, he was very detailed on what he wanted to do, and his squads were fairly flexible. Most people don't remember, but that's a big reason we even sniffed the Final in 1990.
Giusti was either a RB or RM depending on how you categorize that Bilardo formation (5-3-2 or 3-5-2), here's an article that talks about it: http://backpagefootball.com/tactics-...nd-forth/5928/

As a non-Argentina and too young arround that time, I always got Batista and Batistuta confused. They were in seperate eras and didn't overlap right?

I'm going off memory, tbh... I'm pretty sure Cucciufo played RB when we played 4 at the back (and Garre started as the LB, but IIRC he got injured early and Olarticoechea took over). As a matter of fact, him and Olarticoechea would go up all the time. If I'm not mistaken, Cuciuffo was the guy that was fouled attacking on the right, on the free-kick that ended up in the 1st goal in the Final (Brown header).

Certainly possible Giusti was playing on the right and Enrique on the left, and I have that wrong.

The graph shows the 5-back lineup, with Cuciuffo and Ruggeri in front of Brown (which makes sense, since Cuciuffo always played CB on club play), and Giusti as the RB. Not going to argue with that, it's been 30 years

The formation had 3 central defenders at all times. It was Bilardo's "innovation" which he keeps bragging about ad inifinitum. The two guys on the sides did not operate like traditional fullbacks or wide midfielders. The niche word was "lateral volante" which is a player who covers the flanks as a fullback when the team losses the ball and offers himself wide beyond the halfway line when they're attacking. Batista operated as a traditional defensive midfielder, but he was given some liberties to distribute the ball higher up the pitch and to start the pressing in the opposition field if the ball was lost.

Bilardo was very obsesive, to the point of OCD. So when the opposition scored or created chances he would swap the formation or the players positions. Enrique did not play in the tournament up to the match vs. England in the quarterfinals where he gave Diego that assist for his second goal. That team was made of many players who went to become managers, some , some good, but they clearly had a passion for understanding the game and had tactical awareness to respond according to the different situations in a match. The current kids... I doubt they are much interested in tactics except for Mascherano, Zabaleta, Maxi Rodriguez and few more. They just want to play, then play FIFA, go out clubbing and screw chicks.

Yup. Cucciufo also started 5 of the 7 games. Bilardo loved to tinker with the team and lineups depending on the opponent. Definitely obsessed, but hard to argue with the results.

Oh, and Diego did have a STAAAAAACKED team back in '82. That squad was probably the most stacked in all Argentina's World Cup participations. Fillol, Passarella, Ardiles, Ramón Díaz, Maradona, Kempes, Bertoni, Gallego, Valdano, Valencia, Trossero, Tarantini, Olguín, Olarticoechea, Galván, Calderón, Barbas...

Menotti ed up big time with his tactics and preparations, but the team was affected by off-field issues too. Malvinas war going on and all that. Being told back home "we're winning the war" and then arriving in Spain and finding out the complete opposite.

Batistuta was one of the last players to win a tournament with Argentina, 1993 Copa America in Ecuador.
