My understanding is Miami has 10M-12M cap space, including the big 3.
How many roster spots do they have to fill with that?

The report earlier this week claimed that the Heat "could" or "hoped" to have that much money to entice a top tier FA (Lowery, Gortat, Ariza, etc) to come. Reports have come out since stating that LeBron wants the max and Bosh wants 5yr/$90M. Unless Wade takes a HUGE discount, they won't have that much in space. Regardless, they wouldn't create that much space to secure Boozer's rights.

I'm assujing it takes into account Cole, Haslem, Bosh, Lebron and Wade. Maybe 7 or 8 need to be filled. But, They'll have the MLE and veterans min. contract to help fill in the remaining roster spots.

You need at least 7 more players to fill out a team.

I can't see teams going beyond 5M to secure Boozer.

They'd have to be under the cap to claim Boozer OR be over the cap to use the MLE - they can't have both.

They won't have to - but I disagree. Boozer is still a decent big man, and considering the Monopoly money that's being thrown around lately (Bradley, Gortat, Gordon, etc) he'd easily get $5M.

Sign Boozer while they're under. Then, sign another player to compliment Boozer for roughly 5-7M. Now, Miami has access to the MLE.

That's not really how it works. Once they use the money while they're under on Boozer, the MLE option is gone. The only way they have the MLE is if they only sign their own FA's which puts them over the cap, then they can use the MLE.

They'd have to renounce all of their cap holds (including James, Bosh, Wade) to do it, but even then I don't think they could/would do that for Boozer.

This is because Teams cleared a lot of cap space this offseason and they're are very few high profile free agents on the market. Players are the beneficiaries of generous spending by GMs because they can no longer pocket the leftover cash like they used to. This is leading to mid tier players making much more than they normally would.

I know WHY they're spending it now - and you're basically making my point of Boozer being capable of getting more than his market value by one of these teams that has money to burn.

They're running out of options at this point. They got blistered in the paint last year so they have to find a rebounding/shot blocking presence that can actually score. He may be their best option remaining if they strike out on Deng.

They can't do it (as DPG and I have pointed out) though, unless they give up on bringing the Big 3 back - and they aren't going to risk that on a player like Boozer.

Well, MIA can bid on him assuming they do have cap space (which is possible depending on what Wade/Bosh take). He might be their best option if they strike out on Pau/else where. They just won't have the MLE available if they do.

Dude the spurs were light years ahead of the league last year, and there is no reason to think that will change next year unless OKC adds a key piece which can gel with Brix and KD. Add that to the uncertainty in Miami, and the fact HOU has two perpetual losers on there squad and are looking to add a 3rd. The other well coached teams (Mavs, Clips, and Bulls) are missing key parts which even if added will need at least a year to gel. nah, if Andrson is the only addition after signing Mills/Boris we're great
OKC won 2 games playing 2.5 on 5. Two of their key rotation players (Sefalosha and Butler) were unplayably bad by the end of the series. If they add even 2-3 decent rotation players and are healthy they are just more talented than us. You can take them lightly if you want, I don't care, but if PATFO share the sentiment of your post I am pretty worried.

I missed that post. Why can't they do it?
He's saying based on known reports (Bosh's contract demands, Lebron wanting max) that the earlier reports of MIA having 11M in cap space is not likely. We won't know until Bosh/Wade sign (if they do). They can have cap space, but they can't have cap space and use the MLE. That's what they can't do.

They can't use the MLE combined with a claim using cap space - one or the other according to league rules.\

And if recent reports are true of LeBron and Bosh's demands, Wade will have to take a HUGE paycut to make a bid on Boozer even a thought. Now if Bosh signs elsewhere, I can see them placing a significant bid in for Boozer - but that would be moot, considering that they would be downgrading the position and making Miami weaker.

Ah, thanks. that clears things up. By claiming Boozer, they lose the MLE.

It's chicken or the egg scenario with MIA. Their FA's have cap holds that put them over the cap so they technically have no cap space. As management negotiates with FA's and get a number from them, they then go back to the big 3 and tell them and they agree to whatever numbers collectively make that work (in theory).

It's a dicey strategy to some degree, but that is how it works. Basically, with a team's own free agents/cap holds, you do two things: If the contract they are going to sign is bigger than the cap holds, you sign FA's first, then your own guys. If their new contract will be less than their cap hold, you sign your guys first and then other FA's with your cap space.
