I don't see too many weaknesses in this team. Got pretty good depth. Maybe adding a little more athleticism could help.

If the Spurs can't get Pau, then yes, I agree with that. I'd like to look at adding some more athleticism.

If you want the exact same team, we'll gladly take Kyle Anderson in exchange for nothing

I'd like to bring Mike Miller in for more three point shooting and to give Manu some extra rest in the regular season. He's surely going to need it after playing hurt for Argentina in that insane 5 games in 6 days WC schedule.

    The mavs would not agree

That being said the only 2 teams to repeat in the last 10 years added a good player in the offseason. Ray Allen for the Heat and Ron Artest for the Lakers
THere is a difference to letting starters go and trying to upgrade your weak spots.

Too late. We've already drafted Anderson.

    What are the 'smart' moves?

To me, Diaw is a must. This championship hinged on him, and you won't find another player you could plug in right away and get equal or better results.

People are hating on Bellinelli. This board was loaded with lots of "Get rid of Diaw. He's terrible" after his first season. The longer a player like Bellinelli is in the Spurs system and isn't afraid of working, I expect him to improve by leaps and bounds year after year. Splitter has been greatly improved every season he has been in SA. I expect Green's game to be much more rounded out next season as well. We got a taste of it in the finals. Corey Joseph is another example of great improvement. Sticking with the same team but vastly improving each player's weakest part of his game is far better than pluggin in someone who hasn't bought in or creates locker room issues.

The only guy I thought didn't improve was Bonner. Maybe it is time for him to move on, I don't know. But I think that is the only smart cut the Spurs can make. And what would you get in return that can do better than what Bonner does? I wasn't sold on Daye, but that move has been done. If Diaw bolts, then there is an opportunity to make a bigger move, but keeping Diaw would be smarter and easier than letting him get away.

    There is evidence that suggests

    Diaw is a must re-sign.

I want Bonner to remain a Spur, but I do not want him in a uniform. Instead, I want him in a suit sitting next to Udoka, as one of Pop's assistant coaches. However, I know that he still has a few years of being a player left in him. Unless he is willing to take the minimum, then he must move on elsewhere.

I want Pau Gasol. I am not a huge fan of him TBH, but he is very skilled and has a high basketball IQ. Also, he would fit in great with our international squad. I know he is on the downside of his career, but he can still give us a good 25-30 minutes a game. Not only that, but we strengthen our team, make the Lakers weaker, and keep Gasol away from OKC. I know it is a long shot at best, but until it doesn't happen, I will hold out hope that it will happen.

I remember the draft where we took Ian instead of Marc Gasol in the first round. I was quite upset at the time. I was even more upset when the Lakers drafted Marc and then proceeded to use him in a trade to get Pau Gasol and revive the Lakers for their last le run. Had we taken Marc Gasol, we could have either kept him to play alongside Duncan or traded for Pau ourselves. Oh, that darn hindsight.......

So for poops and giggles, let's say we do re-sign Diaw, Bonner moves on, and Pau signs a 4 year deal with us.

    PG - Parker, Mills, Joseph
    SG - Green, Manu, Belinelli
    SF - Leonard, Anderson, Daye
    PF - Duncan, Diaw, Ayres
    C - Gasol, Splitter, Baynes

We may have to cut Daye or Ayres to make room for Cotton until Patty comes back.....but we do have Parker, Joseph, Manu, Belinelli, Leonard, and Anderson who can all play the PG role if needed. Also, I really do not like our SF situation after Leonard. We should try and trade a couple of 2nd round picks, maybe even some of our Euro prospects, and even a small bit of cash to Miami for the rights to SF James Ennis.

The guaranteed money for Cotton was to get him to sign with us instead of another team. He's Austin Toros bound after we cut him in camp.

I figured as much.....but with patty out for a while.....the spurs might keep him around as insurance.

We don't have enough money for Gasol.
